No towing package on 4x2 in middle-Atlantic?

Firstly, hi. I'm looking to purchase a DC Taco sometime soon and this forum has been very helpful!

I'm in NC which as part of Toyota's south-east dealer group has several added on fees for every Toyota they sell. It looks like it's cheaper to get one from VA for me... but I ran into one problem.

I haven't decided on 4x4 or PreRunner (mostly a money decision) but it seems that while I can get a PreRunner with towing package in NC I can't do that in VA. The configurator only shows the towing package if I select 4x4, and even then, it's not an option, it's included with each TRD or SR5 package. This seems odd to me. Thoughts?

First off, Welcome to Tacoma World!
I can't get the Toyota website (w/ local zip code) to build a Prerunner Tacoma without the TRD including the tow package, either.
And I know that it is in-fact available here because I test drove one, myself.
I would find a reputable VA dealer and talk to a salesperson about it.
If they can't get one through their network (tell them you'd be willing to have them do a dealer trade). While I bought my while I was living in MT, Speedway blue wasn't a regional color and they dealer swapped for one from the Midwest region, so I can say with high probability that they could help you out, too.
They should also be able to order one how you described (Prerunner, V6, Towing). Although with the lack of bartering leverage, it may come out in the wash if they end up ordering one.
Hope that inspires you! Or maybe it isn't what you wanted to hear!!

I'm ok with the TRD package... but I can't even build a PreRunner at all with the tow package using a DC zip code (20001). It seems as though dealer inventories in VA and DC reflect that too. Oh well.

I can't say I'm sad that I'm "forced" to get the 4x4 tho... just thought I was missng something. If I use a local NC zip code I can configure almost anything I want... but they tack on at least an extra $800+ here for regional advertising fees. I could order it exactly like I want, but I suspect I'll be limited in negotiating ability if I have to order.

4x4 here I come!

Also try www.toyotaofwilmington.com . I negotiated back and forth between them and Sparks (Myrtle Beach) and they had what I wanted (and so did Sparks which is where I bought it).

I sent out requests for several dealers today and got back a reasonable offer from Alexandria Toyota, but it didn't have the towing package! I guess I expected it, but now I can't use it to get the other dealers to go lower. It's kind of frustrating. I think I will try a dealer in another area (TN maybe?).

In case you're curious, the quote I got was $22,919 (PreRunner TRD Sport DC) which seemed decent for without towing.

I thought all the TRD trucks came with the towing package, or maybe that is just the NJ, PA, NY region. Might want to have them check that again.

She sent me the actual mfr invoice and it did not include the towing package. On the configurator using the zip 20001 towing is not an option anywhere, but it automatically comes with each package on the 4x4 (SR5 and TRD). In NC it's an option on all V6 models. It's crazy how different the configurations are between regions.

Yeah, Toyota is moderately retarted about this stuff, there is no reason that I can't buy exactly the same truck in Texas that I could buy in California, that I could buy in New York. Good luck in your search, and I'd still take a shot at using the price you got as a negotiating point with the other dealers, the chances that they'll call and verify your price and options is slim to none, and if they do bust you on it, just play dumb.
