Anyone Towing a Toy-hauler??

I love the 2nd gen tacomas, and am looking to purchase a 2010 or 11 to tow a 18 ft toy hauler, when loaded weighs about +4500lbs. Has anyone had successes towing this weight, or even toy haulers with a taco, I know they can tow 6500 but is it a majorly tough tow?? any insight would be great!!!

Thanks!!

Toy Hauler

This is what I tow. Its a 2010 Funfinder Xtra 205. It is 24'9" overall and weighs 4200 lbs dry. I pulled it from the dealer and brought it home which was a 6 hour ride. I pulled at about 63 mph and I got about 11 mpg. It will pull 70 mph if you want to pay for the gas. I hav a 2008 Taco with towing package and she does fine. I also live in Florida and dont have any mountains.

Your truck will handle 4500# without problems. I'm setting my truck up to tow my 29' Passport Ultra Light. My Travel Trailer weighs 5100 dry..... It will be a tough chore for the Tacoma. I will use the tacoma for mostly local towing. Will use my Wife's Suburban for any longer trips.

I'm currently waiting to install my Firestone Ride-Rite air bags and Aux Transmission cooler.

I've towed my Travel trailer a couple of times without these things and the truck had plenty of power to pull it..... The tongue weight of my trailer makes the Tacoma squat too much for my liking, hence the air bags.

Good Luck with your travel Trailer!

Depending on what's in the back, it's 2500 to 4000lbs. Tows nice... but I've towed it with a new Tundra and there is no comparison. Mileage takes a big hit... especially in the hills of northern BC and into Alaska...

Isn't the Tongue Weight over the taco limit?

Just be VERY careful on tongue weight on Toy Haulers.

They were designed and balanced to be towed with toys in the back.
No toys, just using it for a travel trailer, you'll blast your tongue weight limit if you head out with the water tank filled.

Tow it empty and fill it at the campground.

This goes for any truck... not just the Taco.

I have talked to a number of trailer places and they said 10% is just a rule of thumb. 15% is closer to the max. That puts the tongue at 975. You guys will be the second to know if anything happens.

So loaded you're towing 9750lbs?

725 tongue @ 10% = 7,500lbs

Here's my Toyhauler and 08 Sport 4x4 with tow pkg.
Trailer weighs 3580lbs dry and sits about 6150lbs loaded with the car and gear.

Tows pretty well on flat-er ground. Not too fun towing on steeper hills

KZ RV MXT 160 Toy Hauler

Finally found a toy hauler that tows well behind my Tacoma, has a nicely equipped interior just like an normal RV trailer and my GS fits in it.

Tows great and only needs 25 lbs of air in the Firestone air bags to keep the rear of the truck level.

Really pleased with it.
