Ok i have a 1990 Pickup 4x4 with the V6, automatic, with 4.10 gears. The truck is stock with 188,000 miles. At about 40-55 mph she runs between 2200-2500 rpm. This sounds high to me can I get some opinions. I have a new MAF sensor, Spark pulgs and wires. Tranmission fluid and filter. Yet it seems like the truck idols fast and takes forever to shift. I have noting to compare this to as I never been around a truck like this when it ran correctly. If this is correct it will most likely be for sale. My fuel gauge is slightly above 1/4 of a tank and I have 93 miles on the tank. I believe it is a 17 or 18 gal. tank. Any ideas will be taken into consideration and appreciated. Thanks.

I was thinking the high Rpms could be explained by the engine being so small and under powered. But the High fuel consumption is unbelievable. Drove 93 miles and used 3/4 of a tank. Thats insane. Yes I do have the 3.slow, 4.10 gears and an automatic, but still. This exact same truck with the 4 cylinder is making 19 city and 25 highway, this being said by a guy that has been the sole owner of his 91 model.

    She's gone but not forgotten.
3/4 of a tank and you got 93 miles out of it...I think I'd consider installing a locking gas cap, let the neighborhood punks buy their own gas!

I had a 84 with the 22R, don't remember what the mileage was (back then gas was so cheap nobody bothered to figure it out) but I know it was a lot better than that.

I wish that were the case. I already have a locking door for the fuel tank.

not that it explains a lot but with that millage you might want to check out the sensors (O2) and ensure they haven't gone out. If they're out it could be way over compensating and burning really rich. Usually a pretty cheap and easy fix, again can't say if it is an issue though. 93 miles on what, 13 gallons is outrageous (7mpg get real). You don't have it loaded down, towing all the time, or anything of that nature right? you do have a new air filter (or cleaned) right? lol...

Seems unreal... my '08 4.0L v6 is getting about 18mpg and I drive it like I did my g35... gas on or off.

Also since you changed your sparkies, pull them out one buy one and verify they're still clean and not gunked up. Also I'd do a spark test on all of them to ensure all are firing correctly... maybe you're only running on 3 or 4 cyl's. Having a compression test might not hurt either. Still, even with all of that, 7mpg seems unreal. Sure you're not leaking gas somewhere (since they're not stealing it) lol

Clean air filter and no load on it ever. I have pulled the plugs after I installed them they looked good but only had about one tank of gas roughly 100 some odd miles. lol. I parked the truck in the grass nest to my house if the gas were leaking the grass would have died by now the truck stayed parked for a few weeks. The o2 sensor will be next on my list and I am still trying to remove the old fuel filter. Been spraying it with everything I can find that sob is on there.

Holy thread revival batman. I'll give an update. At the time of this thread I had good compression.
I replaced the fuel pump twice due to the tank being rusted out, dropped the tank treated and coated it. replaced all fuel filters and added an additional one for shits and giggles. Replaced the fuel injectors at this time the truck wouldn't idle by itself but would run smoothly at speeds if you could manage to get it onto a back road and give it a go. I finally broke down and sent it to a shop a few weeks ago while I went to work.
When I returned home it was ready and the mech. had replaced the EGR valve and found rust in the new injectors, silly me I over looked having rust in the rails.
Now the truck runs ok has a miss, the mech. told my GF that when I came in to swing by he needed to talk to me. He was out the 1st 2 days I was home. In that time I took the truck all over, even pulled a ford.
    IMAG0382_0c1afefe61e099be23bac8afdec88ca003122b2c.jpg

I finally get to meet with him and learn that the #4 cylinder has NO compression. So for now I'm undecided on what will happen.

But until I dertermine what my next step will be I'll continue taking the truck out and testing the limits of its other components.
