Alternator hot, replaced, new Alternator hot

Any suggestions? I have a 99 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, 2.7. Alternator was running extrememly hot, replaced it even though it tested out ok. New one is still running hot.

Also, emergency brake light stays on, horn blows the fuses, heater doesn't work, not sure if it is all connected to the problem.

Any suggestions?

 

welcome to TW! sounds like a wiring problem. since when did they put a altinator temp gage in tacomas... must be a 1st generation thing.

 

No temp guage, just by touch. Trying to troubleshoot the wiring since I think it is all related to the same issues.

 

im pretty sure the alternator gets hot regardless. have u had ur brakes looked at lately? i know on my older toyota pickup, when the brakes needed replacing the emergency brake light would comeon and i had to mess with the emergency brake to make it go away. after replacing the brakes, i didnt have the problem anymore.

the horn thing i dunno? check to see if the power wire is grounding out is all i can think of

 

Puah in on the ebrake handle n see if the light goes out. I know a few guys that had 1st gens n that happened to them. The alternator gets hot regardless. Its creating electricity and its close to the engine. Dunno bout the horn or heater

Either there is a short on the horn circuit, or it's going bad. Check for voltage at the heater. If none on low, check the blower resistor. If none on high, swap the blower relay.
If the parking brake is not seated or the switch is broke, the light will stay on.

Are you running amps, running lights, etc? The harder the alternator works, the hotter it will get. Be sure you are not overloading it. Borrow an amprobe and run everything with the probe on it to see what you're drawing.

 

Did you ever get the hot alternator issue sorted?

I'm having the same problem, suddenly. 1999 Tacoma V6 3.4L. Long story short; My truck is stone cold, I start the motor and 30 seconds later the alternator is crazy hot and I can smell it burning. I can also hear the belt straining. I unplug the alternator control wires and the problem goes away, however this disables the alternator.

I'm thinking it's an alternator problem, but I don't know if there's any external voltage regulation and I would hate to replace the alternator only to find out the problem is something else. It's definitely a problem, not normal. I stopped driving when I smelled the burning.

 

did you know a bad battery can cause your alt to produce full field current all the time,which will ruin a alternator, also battery connections and battery failure can cause all the problems you are talking about, Id really clean all battery terminals and connections and check your battery. there is also a amp draw test for your alternator you can do and battery tests. thats where I would start.

My battery seems fine, it charged right up to full charge with my automatic 6A charger. It also holds charge fine and allowed me to drive the 30 minutes home from work without an alternator. My new alternator will hopefully be in today and I'll post back with the result.

 

I put the new alternator in this morning and that seems to have done the trick, things are back to normal. I guess something went bad inside it.

 

Good! Probably a shorted diode.

 

I have a 2004 Tacoma 3.4 4x4 having the same issue with the alternator. I changed out battery and alternator and just noticed it was physically very hot just by touching it. And the ground wire to my battery the negative broke loose. Would this be a factor of the over heating of the alternator. New to this appreciate everyone's help just can't get any answers from anyone. I just done know how hot a alternator is suppose to get.
