Whinning sound from 2009 Tacoma Long Bed

I have a 2009 Tacoma Long bed with 29,000 miles on it and I am getting a whinning sound from the rear of the vehicle when tapping the gas @ 70 MPH. I thave taken it to the Dealer 3 times and each time they say it is normal for this vehicle. The last time it was in which was today 2 toyota reps came to the dealer and road with me inthe truck and heard the sound and they said that they have heard this before and that it is normal but if it gets worse to bring it back. Their are no TSB's for a 2009 with thsi problem. Can someone help me with this issue.

Yes. It is a like a high pitched whistle and sort of like a wobbling noise from the back of the truck at 60 - 70 mph when I lightly press or let of of the gas. Toyota Rep has admitted that they have some issues with the differentials and when they see this it usually occurs between 50 and 70 mph. B/C Toyota wil lnot do anything yet I was going to have a machanic that I trust just look things over to confirm where it is coming from.

 

Try changing the diff oil.

Over th epast two days I have noticed that it makes the same noise s bit even if I am going on a decline without pressing the gas pedal. It still makes the noise when I either press or let off on the gas pedal at 70 mph. Does this still seem like a differential problem - linkange problem or could it be in the rear wheel?

My truck makes a light whistling noise when I coast up or down (especially down) an incline, around 65 mph. I can't tell where it's coming from, but it's not wind noise because it stops if I press the gas or press in the clutch.

I only have 10k miles, and it has done this for as long as I can remember.

 

I am going to try to have the differential fluid changed and see if that makes a difference. I have seen other posts of Toyota changing the differential out but my dealers around here will not do it. They did say wait to see if it gets worse and that it is documented.

 

Thanks TACK. It is hard based on a noise to determine exactly where the noise is coming from in the rear of the truck. Have you taken it to your dealer to check it out. Mine just tells me its normal but I still don't buy it.

 

Sorry for the late response TACK but to your first question. The noise I hear is almost like a whistle from the rear of the truck. At first it was only when I lightly pressed and released the gas at 70 MPH but now it does it espcially on a decline between 60 - 70 without my foot on the gas pedal. Sounds like our problems are similar.

Nope, I haven't had mine looked at.

Let us know how this turns out. I'm interested to hear if this noise is the diff and if changing the fluid helps.

 

OK TACK. I have consulted with justanswer.com on this and the toyota techncian told me that this is gears in the rear diff get a bad wear pattern this will happen and in some case adjusting the preload on the gears and changing the fluid will work but if the wear pattern is too bad the ring and pinion has to be changed. I am trying the fluid on monday and if that don't work I am going to raise holy hell with the management a the dealer and escalate the issue. I will post my results on Monday 8-12-11.

 

Well today I changed the fluid in the differential and my mechanic found metal in the differential. I could not get the vehicle up to 70 mph due to the fact it was raining hard today. I saved the metal shaving in case it still makes the noise so I can show the dealer. I will post more info tommorrow after I can properly test the vehicle.

 

Aren't some metal shavings normal? But yeah, let us know if it's still making the noise.

 

Some very small metal particles are normal. Flakes and chips are not. It should look like metal sludge on the magnet/plug.
