Ok so I’m new to the Toy world and this is my first truck (90s pickup). I like the idea of having a truck and its nice to have the bed but this is more a winter/off road rig and so far I’m not impressed. It’s currently equipped with a 5.5” lift and I just recently dropped down to a used set of 33s because its still running the stock 4.10 ratios and the new 35s (As nice as they are) are simply too damn big. Now for the real problem……it’s a 3.0 V6 which I have learned (in the few months I’ve owned it) is most likely the worst motor Toyota has ever mass produced. My cousin who was running a stock 22re and is now currently running a 22re turbo motor pulled away from my 6-cylinder completely stock. It was embarrassing.
I have always owned Jeeps and I’m in love with the 4.0 HO motors they run and I’ve grown accustom to the power produced even with a lift and bigger tires. I have heard of guys that have swapped the newer 3.4L out of the Tacoma into there pickups and this would as of now be option one for me. Option two would be to swap a turbo 22re motor very similar to my cousins rig and run that. Hopefully option three will not result in my banishment from this forum lol, :anonymous:but opt. three would be to take a 4.0 HO and tranny out of a jeep XJ or TJ and swap it in for the P.O.S V6. Obviously any of these swaps if even possible will take its toll on my bank account but I simply can not go on and fully experience a Toyota and all its worth with the 3.0 I currently have. Any advice on what you would do and why would be a great help.
Anyone out there with a write up or build of their own in relation to this thread would be greatly appreciated as well. Sorry if I offended anyone with the 4.0 Idea :p but I had to ask. Any help is welcome thanks

With enough money, you can do (almost) anything. One concern for any of the motor swaps is resaleability. If you ever plan to resell it (not a good idea probably anyway), the swap will kill the value.

I'd probably either sell it and find a more suitable vehicle without needing to do a motor swap or put in the 22re because i've got a weakspot for it...

22RET with R151...mated to a gear driven case with the Turbo rear end.
Oh yeah! Best combo out there.

3.4 v6 for sure. the dohc is a huge advantage. all my friends have jeeps. in-line 6's, and v8's, and my truck, with the only thing that could effect performance is a deck plate mod and exhaust. ur choice, but i can assure u 99% of the people on here are gonna vouch for toyota and tell u to steer clear of those glorified SUV's haha

I just looked up the specs on the I6 vs the 3.4L and there pretty damn close. I dont plan on selling this truck as long as I can get the power I want out of it. the I6 vs the 3.4 are identicle besides the 3.4 pushing 220 tq at 3600 rpm vs the I6 at 225 tq at 4000rpm. I would much rather stick with a toy engine if possible, especially if its gonna hang with the 4.0s. Does anyone have any links to write ups on someone whoes done this swap?

How long is that straight 6? I don't think its gonna fit in the short toyota engine bay. I'd prob go with a v6 just because of the space

Has anyone heard of doing a cummins 4bt swap? That would be pretty bad ass to have a diesel pickup, at least I think it would be. Anyone else have something to add?

I've seen Landcruiser engines in Tacomas, and 2JZ's have been done. If those both fit..pretty sure a 4.0 Heep motor will fit.

Been done in older Pickups, think there is a documented swap on 1st gen Taco floating around somewhere.

There is a company that does them on 2nd Gens, but they use a Toyota diesel.

22r-te was only around 140 HP stock if I remember right. Someone here will know for sure. If you are willing to put money into them, they can be made much more powerful. But you would have a ways to go before you were equal to a stock 3.4. Stock 3.4 would be reliable, hot rodded 22r-te, who knows?

3.4 is close to bolt in if you already have 3.0. 22r-te would require all new motor mounts in addition to the wiring hassle that you would have with either swap.

I would go 3.4. I've never heard anyone complain about the outcome of that sway.

The turbo 22r would be awesome built up, but I think it would always be a project. Do you want a project in the garage or a truck on the road or trail?
