I haven't been able to find much in the way of reviews on some of the commercially available cages for the '85 era pickup. Specifically Marlin Crawler's and 4x Innovations. Anyone have some strong opinions on them or is it six of one and half a dozen of another?

I had one in my '81 PU. I got it to fit nice and tight so head room was still good. I did save me when I rolled really hard one time, but the cab was no good after.

Did you make it yourself or buy one? I really like the idea of the removable one Marlin offers, but 4x's has a bit more tube work. How hard is to tear apart the dash and interior with a cage installed?

I could always go with the 4x and add some of these in strategic locations:

I had one in my 83 pickup. It was in there when I bought it. I was told it was a toyota one. It was pretty stout.

I have the All-Pro removable cage in my 89 pickup. Fit is nice and pretty tight, installation was simple, and we added a few extra braces to make it stronger. My boss has the cage from 4xinnovations in his 84. We cut in some ID tube clamps from trail gear. Works awesome and removeable if need be. They are both pretty much the same and offer good head room in a small cab.

Here is my 89 before i added padding to it.

I have the 4xInno cage in my 85 Ext cab.

It is a very well thought out design and went in easily.

If I went with a commercially available one, I'd go with the 4x. As for the tube clamps, oddly enough it seems Camburg has the best prices I can find. The guys at RuffStuff said the tube clamps would be great for just about anything, but doesn't recommend them for main pillars.

The main pillars are tubes that should never really need to be taken out.

the tube clamps are used for engine cage x members, removable door bars, fuel cell x members and stuff like that. things that can potentially be taken out for servicing, replacement etc..

we offer many diff tube clamp sizes and wall thickness. check out our site and keep in mind that we do offer at TW discount!! PM me for details.
