31's should be fine. The 22r is a 2.2l 4 cylinder carberated engine. It is built proof except for the timing chain guides.

those trucks are bullet proof. We had a 86 that was put through hell and back numerous times. body went to shits but motor didn't burn a drop of oil after almost 500 000kms and the frame was still solid.

I've always wanted an 83 though. Solid front axles are nice to have

You can go with early model cam gear/crank gear/chain/guides/tensioner & have double roller steel stuff that will last forever.

Oh, the motor will probably tick (22r valve tap). Don't worry about that though. It is normal.

KTaco I thought it was 84 and 85 for the solid axles or could it be different in canada?

Since he's using it for mudding do you think he would want to regear with the 4 cylinder?

If I had the time and money I would love to make that truck look as close to this one.

I believe 85 was the last year they were made with the solid front axle. If your saying that 84/85 was the best year to get then it may be. I think 84 is when they introduced the plastic timing chain guides and increased the flange bolts size. I've driven a 83 before and had a chance to toy around with one so that why I opted to say 83.

As for gearing I belive the 88 model would come stock with either 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88 gears. Best check which ones the truck has but i'd say that unless extreme rock crawling is in his mind then even the 4.10's would be ok with 31's.

just my 2 cents

Don't plan to go rock crawling at all and the mudding i do wont be to extreme nothing like at a mudstock where the whole truck is buried up to the door in mud. I mainly want to trail ride and small mud holes with it.

I want tires that stick out past the fenders what kinda tires would i need to do this? like 31-15-11.50 or something? i had a 90 Nissan that i sold and its tires stuck out some they where on it when i bought it.

i ran 31x10.50s on 15x10 rims...they stuck out several inches...lol...the only problems i ever had with the 88 in 300k miles were: timing chain replaced once, replaced the alternator, starter went out then i replaced it at a shop for like $100 then later realized you can replace the copper contacts yourself for 5 cents each...real easy to do just disconnect battery first, so starter problems 2 times, clutch master cylinder went out every 50k miles and brake master cylinder went out every 100k miles...each like $50-$100 to get fixed...not a big deal....and once i left it idling and the radiator blew out a hole in it so a new radiator was $200 to get installed...that is it....really not very expensive at all to keep it going...it will probably burn oil or leak oil a bit since it is that old...maybe you could rebuild the engine later on..shouldn't cost too much

with the right rims you might be able to fit some 12.5'' wide tires on there. Personally I'd say skinner tires are better unless your in mud or snow over the wheel height. 11.5'' is the width of tire I have on now and it's treating me good. sticks out enough to cover the truck with mud even when it seems like there was no mud to be found haha

Well i ended up buying the truck today it works pretty good for a off road toy but other then that its not good for a daily drive. The guy said the motor was rebuilt about 500 miles ago and it has a new clutch in it but i dont know if he was telling the truth or not but the tires they GOT TO GO they are uluggy on it with a 6" lift the tires looks tiny im going to have to get new ones quick also the small tires makes the axel sit low to the ground which is not good when going off road. My ? now is what is the biggest tires i could use on this? i would like to put some 36's on it can that be done? i know it will clear on height but im not sure if i would have to regear it the guy who sold it said i wouldnt he said it was 4.29 grear ratio but i dont know if he knows what hes talking about or not and how would i find out what gear ratio it is? and if i cant use 36's what is the biggest i could use w/o havein to regear it? the rims on it is 15"

i will get pics of it tommarow and put on here
