My brother has a 1997 4Runner V6 4wd and it is making an odd noise. He took it in to the dealer to have it looked at and they told him it would be $800 to fix his exhaust system that is rusted all the way back to the cat. It has holes in it.

He lives in Central New Jersey and would like to fix the problem for less than $800. What are his options? Can an exhaust system be found for less than that? What should he expect to pay to have a used system installed by a local body shop?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

How does that solve the problem

I told him to sell it and buy a Tacoma but again...that doesn't solve the problem.

You can drive over here to Lancaster and pick up my 2007 original cat-back tacoma exhaust for free...that is, if you can make it work. I honestly couldn't tell ya.

If you're looking for budget friendly...maybe you can find stuff in a local junkyard, ebay, or post around for used original equipment stuff.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
He should be able to buy all the parts (OEM direct replacement) for less than half of that at a chain parts store. If he can do the work himself, that would also kill a lot of $$$ off the top.

well if its rusted all the way to the cat, which would mean cat forward if you get headers and just use some straigh pipe you could make it work. that is unless you meant from the cat back

Sorry for the confusion...it is from the cat back (to the back of the car). He is calling to get the part numbers right now and I will post up the pieces.

How hard is it to piece together an exhaust system of direct replacement parts? Is there welding involved or do parts just fit together?

Normally the come as seperate pieces. The muffler, tail pipe and pipe between the cat and muffler sometimes come as one and ar usually clamp on.

He can probably find a decent catback system for a lot less than $800 and install it himself. It is a really simple install.

Oh and one reason they cost so much is that they are stainless. He would never have to worry about them rusting.
