No, things were never AWD. But I've seen what the conversion requires, front end gets fitted with a datsun axle. I plant to also use a Type 4 motor, what was in the porsche 912, and 914, and late 70's vw bus. You can build them with fuel injection and electronic controls to where they perform as well as a modern motor (aiming for a 2.4 liter motor)

this is worlds ahead of an x-head as far as looks and utility.

i think that the "Macho thing" you mention is totally it. it seems as if many guys go buy a truck and lift it just because they want to look cool. i dont know how many times i've gone down to the SF bay area and seen dozens of lifted 4x4 trucks that are only pavement pounders. oh, and maybe the guy in that big lifted chevy has it to use it to make up for something else?

I saw a company out in California that built FJ series trucks, looked stout, maybe someone does that for Tacomas.
yeah I think the company is ICON they even put the jeep liberty 2.8L diesel and a 5speed nv-3550 in them if you want sweet sweet trucks...body is all aluminum they only start with an old frame so it can be tagged classic or historic

I don't care much for Hummer, but they're working on a a single and double cab version of a truck complete with front and rear lockers and all the other stuff you would expect on a Hummer.

I have heard of them doing this, Never saw one though. They dont look that bad, But I know that they are very gutless. If they would beef up there engines in those H3's it would be an awsome truck.

the new H3T has the "Alpha" package available with the 315hp 5.3L. that's a pretty awesome motor. both my parents have chevys with the 5.3 and it kicks. i've even got 20.5 mpg average on a highway trip in her ext cab Z71, so it doesnt suck a ton of fuel either.

awsome! I didnt know that. I just talked to someone that drove one off road, and said that the truck struggled in up hill climbs. But thats awsome that the H3T has that package.

This is my first post since my new Taco will not be in until May 10th. My previous Toyota PU was a 1991 Extra Cab with genuine roll-up windows. Like Roland said it was perfect 99% of the time. Got 30 MPG on the highway. It died at 180K when I was rear ended in 2000. Just totally F'ed it up, never the same afterwards. Looks like a good forum. Glad I joined.

A 2000 Ford Focus(don't laugh too loud) it was a pretty good car- very FUN to drive, and a 2005 Honda Accord Sedan(very mediocre car, but great resale) Figured it was time to come home to a Tacoma, as I need a truck occaisionally but not the huge fuel bill. It appears we will have similar trucks.

Welcome to TW. You'll find lots of good people and information on here.
I'm on my 4th Tacoma sized truck and have been hooked since '84.
I must warn you that this truck has had more mods than any of the others and I definitely blame some on this forum for this.

I think the Tacoma is the perfect size right now. The previous generation was to small for me to get comfortable in really. My '05 is the perfect size for me and fits my lifestyle perfectly.

on the H3 debate.......i saw a whipple twin screw supercharger on a "old" 3.5L hummer h3 and it was reported to add 55hp 60ft.lbs and only affect fuel economy by 1mpg and the guy said he gets better fuel economy on highway since he doesnt have to have it half throttle to keep up with traffic....the new ones have 3.7L or the 5.3V8 there has been rumors of a 4.5Lish v6 diesel finding its way in....

Does anyone remember the Subaru Brat? They were all wheel drive and pretty small. A friend of my brothers had one. Of course gas was not part of conversations when it was less than $1 a gallon so no idea what kind of MPG it gets.

I kinda agree. I had a '99, that I just sold to get my barely used '07. It was the "perfect" truck with some minor imperfections..(i.e. xtra-cab too small to put people in...ability to have a child's seat).. Then looking at the 01-04's the double cab had a pretty much useless bed..

I'm now used to this 2nd generation size Tacoma and love the look. A friend just bought a cherry '06 Tundra limited. He brought it over and it's basically the same size as mine. The interior on the Tundra is so much nicer though. It's got leather, nav, DVD for the kids, homelink, moonroof, ect. He stole this thing and it is so clean. I do like the looks of the Tacoma over the Tundra whatever year.

As above I think they should have left them the Tacoma, Tundra, and the new size should have been the Thunder.

^^ Wow... they are the same size!

And I always thought to myself, "I'll never get a Tundra, I don't need a big behemoth truck like that!"
