4x4 wont engage

I have 2008 4x4 double cab manual...it wont engage the 4 wheel when i flip the switch,, i hear the clicking behind glove box.. and when truck isnt on i can hear what sounds near the driver wheel.. but the flashing on indicator doesnt go away.. any ideas?

 

Did you try going forward or backwards a bit while the switch was on 4h??

 

Rev to about 6 grand and side step the clutch.... No don't actually do that. Sometimes you have to rock the truck a bit. Try slowly driving forward and backwards. The more you use the 4x4 the easier it is to engage I find. Most people recommend putting it in 4wd and driving down a dirt road if possible a few times a year.

 

Make sure the clutch pedal is all the way down to the floor.

i have pushed clutch all the way to the floor.. i have tried switching it sitting still.. and going form fwd to rev...

 

Drive forward slowly on a gravel road and zig zag from side to side. Just go slow and don't turn from lock to lock. It should engage.

Sure you don't have a pre runner? Check for front axles... You might have something wrong electronically. I have heard of actuators going bad. Not really sure where to start when troubleshooting these. Might be a dealership thing unfortunately... As a last thing you could try, if you can put the truck up on stands and engage the 4 wheel drive then rock the front tires until the diff engages. This worked for me with my rear wheels when my diff lock wouldn't engage.

 

As long as your engaging it correctly it could be actuator issues...

search for "4x4 actuator issues" and tons of info should pop up.


It's a pretty easy part to replace if need be, but it's expensive. To the best of my knowledge the way to keep 4x4 working is to use it. Lack of use seems to make "using" it problematic. I'm pretty sure the manual tells you to use it for 10 miles per month.
