Transmission gear oil

My 01 Tacoma 4x4 has 100,000 miles on it, and someone suggested I change the transmission oil. When I drained it, it looked fine, and I had no previous transmission problems. I replaced it with Travelers brand 80-90 weight (it calls for 75-90). When it's cold, first and second gears are extremely stiff. I am thinking of changing the transmission oil again to a thinner weight. The Toyota dealership says they use Valvoline 75-90. The O'Reilly's store says Toyota recommends something called Redline. I do not have quick access to that brand of oil. Does Toyota recommend a synthetic transmission oil?

I have a 2000 Tacoma and have always used 75-90 synthetic and never had a problem you described. Do I think the 80-90 is a big difference... not really, although you are likely to see any differences a lot more in cold weather. What you might be experiencing is simply "new" oil that isn't as broken down. If it bothers you I would probably get the 75-90 synthetic.

Buckoma, thanks for the input. What brand do you use?

Valvoline, you can buy cases of it online.

Redline MT90 (75w-90) is the way to go. Its about 15 bucks a quart but its worth it.
