I have a 1990 extended cab 4x4. The 3.0 with an auto trans. I would like to know what engine and trans to have in it for wheeling, because this motor is incredibly under powered. I am also interested in a SAS and those of you with the knowledge to let me know what parts I will need to start gathering up to make all of this possible.

I've had the truck for a while and intended to use it as a work truck but the fuel economy and power is just horrible. So its been sitting on the side of my house. Drop me some ideas.

SAS is a great idea. I know someone will bitch about it but a great combo for those trucks is a 4.3L chevy V6 and a 700R4 trans. They have more power and are easier to find and mod then most toyota motors. Their are companies out their that make motors mounts and stuff for them.

Well if you wana go big boy engine buy a crate 350 those are cheap. Then take your choice at tranny 350 400 or 700R. i wouldnt roll to big of tires with a 700R though. There a lil on the weak side.

That will certainly happen but only after I decide on front and rear ends. Most likely aiming for 35's and 3" of lift or so depending on what it takes to fit the tires.

Great idea. i'd likely go with a different tranny. maybe a 4L60 or 4L80E

I hadn't even considered going with chevy parts. That would be much easier for me. I have access to a built 454 and a 1986 4 bolt main 350 out of a Camaro as well as a 350 and 400 trans.

Keep it coming. What size axles should I run? Are stock fine for moderate wheeling or should I save myself the headache and buy something else such as Rockwell or other brand. What about Junk yard fronts and rear? What should I look for? Thanks for the input already got my mental juices flowing. This would be my first offroad rig. Other than my daily driven 07, which I almost rolled this past weekend.

My 94 has a 94 LT1 with a TH350 trans and a 205TC with 85 axles front and rear. I made the motor mounts, used the stock cross-member, and made the front mounts for my SAS and also made the shackles. I bought a 12" splined driveshaft for the front and had a local shop swap the ends to mate to the TC on both front and rear. It sounds like a lot but it is fairly simple with a little time and mechanical ability. I am getting ready to sell the truck due to the purchase of my 2010 DC SB Sport, which is on it's way to becoming a suitable replacement for the 94!! I will probably end up doing a lot of similar things to the new one when I run out of power or 4 wheel capability.

Thank you all for the input.

What would be a good front end to run? Chevy, Ford, or Toyota? Or should I purchase new?
