I think you mean you'll be driving AROUND the parks on Nov 20. The park roads close to all vehicle traffic from 11/3 to 12/15. And then its snowmobile/snowcoach traffic only until mid April.

Right, I did read most of the roads are closed. US 191 is open all year driving by the Tetons from what I've read (Never seen them and really really want to!), and the North park entrance is the only entrance open for Yellowstone during winter. Did I at least get that right?

If that's true with everything I've read online the only thing to really see at the north entrance is Mammoth hot springs? We plan on taking our snow shoes.

    Thanks

You are correct. Hwy 191 can be a nice drive. If you're coming through MT and have some time to kill let me know and I can get you some details for a few shorter hiking/snowshoeing trails between Bozeman and West Yellowstone. If you're in West Yellowstone there are a couple of nice trails there too. Not sure how much snow will have piled up by then and some of the trails are a little treacherous without a deep snow pack to keep you above the downed trees, etc. I'm a snowshoer too, fallen on my butt plenty of times because there were too many obstacles in my way
Mammoth is nice, won't really require snowshoes there, maybe some yaktrax on your boots as the boardwalks get a little slick. If there's enough snow the Trout Lake trail towards Cooke City in the NE corner of the park is a nice hike. Stop at the Visitor Center in Mammoth and they'll have a special map for snowshoeing/skiing trails.

Other cool things to check out if you're going from MT to WY/Tetons via Hwy 20 in Idaho:
Mesa Falls Scenic Byway - 2 lane highway, really pretty area between Island Park, ID and Ashton, ID.
Big Springs near Island Park, ID - not sure how long they keep this road open but if you can take this little detour off of Hwy 20 do it. There's a natural spring that bubbles up out of the ground and starts the Henry's Fork River...water is so clear!

Good to know! We will be coming from Eugene, OR to Iowa. Not 100% yet what route we will take to get there as we're still deciding what all the cool stuff to see is. Should have 2-3 days to burn. We definitely want to see the Tetons and geysers.

So whats your favorite hike/snowshoe trail with a view? Were also bringing our dog. I know NF's can be a pain with pets but are they allowed on the trials during winter?

Dogs are not allowed on the trails/boardwalks. Pup would have to stay in the car for the most part and whenever out of the car has to be on a leash.

Riverside trail outside of West has a nice view, one of my favorite treks. Sometimes you'll share the trail near the river with buffalo, give them plenty of space.

Specimen Ridge north from Tower Junction is a nice walk too. If you start at the Yellowstone picnic area you just climb up the hill behind the bathroom and then its fairly flat from then on.

There is a section of the original stagecoach road that starts behind the hotel at Mammoth and goes for 5 miles to the North Entrance gate. You could do some or all of this and there's nice views all along the way of the mountains to the north and west and a few ponds too. Mammoth itself doesn't get a lot of snow so this would be more of a hike not a showshoe trek.

Great thread MTGirl! I hope to be headed your way next spring. I have spent a lot of time in the Paradise Valley and YS, but not lately. Your photography is awesome.

Thank ya! If you want any tips/suggestions for your trip just let me know!

I'm hitting the road in a few minutes for my final trip this year...always kinda bittersweet. My fall trips are usually the best (no crowd/traffic, lots of animals) but I know it will be months before I can go back. I had considered camping tonight but we're under a winter storm warning so I think this will just be a day trip.

    Love looking at your pictures!
Our planned trip out there next summer is in jeopardy now. Son's tranny went out on his car (college kid) and had to replace the furnace/AC in the house. Ouch. We will just have to wait and see. So keep on posting pics...that may be the closest I get for a while.

Long time lurker on this thread (drooling over the images).... but the last "But there's so much of it!! [IMG] Poopies everywhere up there..." statement makes me post:

Business opportunity - bag up all the moose poopies and sell them to flatlanders. Tell me they don't instantly remind you of a pile of tater tots. It's where my mind goes every time I come across them. Mmm Mmm Good ;)
