Thought this picture was funny w/ all the tents up at roof height except for the one.
...but I'm left wondering-- what's up with these roof top tents?
I know they're $$$ but are they worth it? Even looking back on it?
What's the advantage of these over a regular 3-4 person tent that can be pitched on the ground as seen above?
Pitch time? When it rains, I know regular tents are supposed to be dried before getting stored... does this hold true for the RTT.
How does it hold up with wind?

 

RTT are awesome man.

Much faster and easier to setup and more comfortable. I LOVE mine. One of the top mods i have dont to the truck by far.

RTTs stay cleaner it seems and finding a place to pitch it is pretty easy..where ever the truck can be sorta level. no more hunting for smooth flat ground.

And thats just by myself. When i have my brother or Jess with me..goes way faster.

Take down is just as easy if not more so.

It is still a tent so yes, you should let it dry out. But you can store it wet just can't leave it like that for very long(few days or longer) but if it was raining and you needed to just get out of the area and home. Be fine. Just needs to be reopened and aired out later.

Wind they also do great in. I haven't had mine out in 60mph crazy shit yet. But everything else i have had..does killer.

Basically, they worth all the hype? Hell yes.

 

if you have the cash for it. of course they are better than a tent. they come with a mattress for heaven sakes haha. tents and pads are kinda sucky. but if you are poor like ben and I...you have to make due with old technology. but of course being off the ground is a plus for a couple of reasons, and dealing with setting up a tent and the poles and rolling it up again. quite the pain.

Nothing wrong with good ole ground tents..but man, RTTs, so much better..haha

 

Just do this. Probably much cheaper to build haha

indeed. only other downside is it does att quite a bit more weight, more drag, and you have to set up a rack for it.

 

that solves zero problems haha. it just makes more. i had plenty of bed space on the trip, no need for a trailer. and with that you still have to set up a tent, so still a pain in the ass, only now you have to put the tent ontop of the trailer haha. an even bigger pita. i would just leave it on the ground.

 

Yea and once you can get a RTT..you'll love it too.

I have nothing against ground tent. They are good. But I love mine. Makes life great.

 

It solves the problem of finding a level spot for the tent and trying to stake it down. Remember how much of a pain in the ass it was to put stakes in in BFE? And it moves you up off the ground. haha

 

I like my RTT but I still have my hiking tent and such for times when I don't have the truck. If I have another with me 3 minutes max for the RTT to put up, less for stowage. Thats why I got it and also because it was only 500$

 

All great points, to ALMOST end my curiosity. I get the pros (being off the ground, comfort, portability, helps convince women ) and the cons (weight, drag, having it secure while DD).
My last question is about the interior:
What's the "person" rating for these tents? I know there are a few different models of the CVT RTT, I would guess by pictures they would classify it as a 3-4 person tent? --> 2 comfortably


They look awesome & very convenient especially if wheeling/backcountry hunting from your rig!

This thread is filled with amazing pictures that words would have a hard time describing. I can only imagine what it was like to take in that scenery (and all those badass Tacos at the same time) in person

I like that pictures are still (re) surfacing months later

 

I wanted one pretty bad, but then aimed for more hard core crawling and I want to keep my COG low. I still want one, but I want to put it on an Expo trailer since I don't have much bedspace as it is.

So...If doing the above in OK I fixed this one for you.

 

Most you see in the pics are Shastas/Bachelors. They sleep 2 EASILY and very comfortably. Could do 3. with the Shastas annex you could sleep 2-3 more down there.

Then Hood and Rainier, you could sleep 3 easily and 4 too. they are 6' wide and 7' longish.

My dad's is the only Helens in the photos. You see how it covers his entire bed? they are big. He also used it for hunting this year i believe.

Meh, the only thing I remove is license plate numbers.
