Toyota has heard you moaning that their TRD Pro trucks are overpriced mall crawlers with shiny exhaust pipes. So to prove their rigs are for real, Toyota is entering this 2015 Tundra TRD Pro in the Full Size Stock class of this year's Baja 1000.

This briefing comes straight from Toyota:

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and Toyota Truck Chief Engineer, Mike Sweers, enter the new 2015 Tundra TRD Pro Series in the 47th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. The lightly modified Tundra Pro Series will compete in the Full Size Stock Class this November 12-16 in Ensenada, Mexico.

"My job is to ensure that the Tundra exceeds the expectations and demands of every single one of its owners," said Mike Sweers, Chief Engineer of Toyota Pickup Trucks. "With over 1,000 miles of harsh terrain, The Baja 1000 is the ultimate proving grounds for research and development that helps us to continuously improve our trucks."

For 35 years and counting, TRD has been an integral component in Toyota's success in the U.S., not only in numerous motorsports racing victories, but in the area of high quality performance parts and accessories. When TRD began developing the 2015 TRD Pro Series, they applied their many years of successful racing experience to make sure it was worthy of wearing the TRD Pro name.

"Competing in the Full Size Stock class allows our team to test the Tundra TRD Pro as close to stock as possible and showcase its strength and durability in the Mexican desert's treacherous terrain," said Andrew Franceschini, Toyota truck marketing and communications national manager. "Our goal is to finish this grueling race and to showcase just how awesome the new TRD Pro Series trucks are."

It will get destroyed by this entry but I'm glad to see Toyota toss their hat in the ring.

I love my Tacoma but Ford owns the full-size truck market, period.

i love what they consider a stock truck, i guess compared to all those crazy trophy trucks in comparison. There is a shop just down from our house that has 3 fully built fords at all times sitting there being worked on for these races. Quite amazing to say the least

Ford is showcasing a motor and tranny, that F150 has a full roll cage and a bed cage, Toyota is showcasing a truck 'almost' off the showroom floor. In no way is that a straight comparison.

I am just wondering what they consider 'lightly modified'

All trucks racing SCORE have the same spec'd full cage inside. The classes are designed so racers compete against others of similar size, power and traction. What Baja does is pound both the trucks and drivers into submission... and Baja usually wins, but for the rest who make it to the finish line, they have proven themselves and their trucks as being able to "Beat the Baja"!

The Ford has consistently had its ass kicked by a Lexus LX570, the Stock Full champion. The truck you are referring to, the 2015 F150 raced all last year, it DNF'ed the 1000. The truck ford entered the year prior, again DNF'ed. It is a far more built truck with factory backing losing to a privateer Lexus and KORE Dodges.

Wonder why the would put lightly modified if they have a full cage inside, that's pretty heavy customization IMO.

Its the class. Stock full trucks are mid travel equipped, stock fenders, doors that open. The suspension isnt that gnarly on stock full trucks.

They should load the back of each vehicle with illegals for extra traction :)

If they didn't have a full cage inside, their probability of death would increase exponentially. It's a safety thing first and foremost.

Here, spend 2 minutes with your volume up, and see why Off Road Baja Racing requires all trucks to have a full roll cage...

I understand why the cage was there, I did not understand why they would word it the way they did.

Maybe one of the more experienced guys here could enlighten us further but...

The cage doesn't change the characteristics of the handling or suspension portion of the truck. In that sense, the truck would still be lightly modified.

It's not any different than running a stock class in a performance car at any serious racing league. Most will require you to have safety features inside the car that far surpass the actual stock seat-belts, etc.

I think Toyota bit off a bit more than they can chew with this entry. I'm still looking forward to the results though. But that Tundra has just not grown on me at all...
