He has stock suspension and stock sized Nitto Terra Grappler tires: 265/65R17.

Here's another example of stock suspension / stock sized 265/65R17 Nitto Terra Grappler tires:

:D He's thinking of switching the matte black for matte bronze, but I personally really like the matte black on his truck!

Wheels look great! Still wanna see a set of the gunmetals on a truck. Might end up with a black set myself anyway. They look really good on any color truck.

How the heck are you guys balancing these tires!?! I've tried the whole putting the weight on the inside of the rim thing, and that only works so well. Still vibes depending on the tire.

Stick on weights? My tire guy isn't going to like the sound of that.....

    Thanks in advance,
    Kraig

I have photos from a customer that powder coated his set Konig Countersteer Type X wheels anthracite light gunmetal, but since this color has yet to be officially released as a factory Konig color, I don't have any other photos just yet. The wheels should be here this week or next though. :)

I use a Hoffman Geodyna balancer on the ALU - 2P setting (dual plane balance for alloy wheels) with stick on weights, and I've had no issues balancing the wheels. If you're going with oversized tires along with the new wheels you're almost always going to get a slight shimmy at high speeds. That's more or less a result of the changes in suspension geometry.

Also, more aggressive (A/T or M/T) tires are inherently going to give more feedback than H/T tires. This again is not really a balancing issue, but just something that goes along with changing the truck. Toyota (and just about all manufacturers) build the trucks to be more on the conservative side, so that they don't get poor reviews for comfort or noise. Even the TRD Offroad models come factory equipped with very conservative tires.

I hope my input helps, but feel free to post or PM me if you need more help.

Ha ha.............you call Rugged Trails "conservative." Very politically correct though. You might get 20,000 miles out of them, conservatively.

I'd say another reason is for a nice quiet and comfy test drive. I have a set of 32" BFG ATs to put on the 17s, so that's why I was curious about the balancing. They usually need a little lead :D

After running those All Terrains for a few years now, I took a 2012 double cab base model for a ride the other day with the 245/75/16 street tires and couldn't believe how quiet and nimble the trucks are capable of being.

Thanks for the info. I'll wait patiently for photos.

The Rugged Trails are definitely more aggressive than an H/T tire, but not nearly as aggressive as BFD All Terrain K/Os. In my opinion the Rugged Trails are a compromise tire between an H/T and a more aggressive A/T. Something that manufacturers can use on their "off-road" models, but, like you said, something that will still be quiet and smooth enough for a test drive.

Your BFD ATs usually do require a little extra weight (we have to use zinc here in California, as lead was banned a few years ago). I don't think you'll have any problem though. If your tire installer is patient he can adjust the tire on the wheel after running it on the balancer, so that he can find the best way to have the wheel and tire lined up to minimize the amount of weights used.

I'll definitely post photos and PM you when the wheels arrive, which should be just about any day between now and the end of next week. :) Thanks for your input too!

I know I'm slacking off, not getting pictures up, so here you go.... I was not prepared for how well the bronze wheels match the Pyrite Mica, I was expecting more of a contrast, something like the color of the TRD Beadlock wheels, but these are a dead match for the truck.

For some reason they make the stock tires look smaller... Billies are next.

Hats off to FN wheels, these guys deliver exactly as promised, and were there to answer all of my questions.
