Are my tires dead or close to dead?

I'm going to get some new tires eventually, within the next 2 or 3 months, but was out looking at these today and noticed they have cracks all over. They have about 50,000 miles on them, I got them in early 07. Should they be replaced soon, or are the cracks just a minor annoyance? (all 4 look similar)

 

How much actual tread is that?

Personally I would be looking to replace them soon.

 

The cracks don't look like a real cause for concern seeing how you're looking to replace them soon anyways. Barring weather conditions, they'd be good for a couple more months.

I'd be looking to get them replaced really soon though since you live in New England... The snow is coming my friend, it already snowed in VT and upstate NY last weekend.

There's maybe about 3/16ths to 1/4 inch of tread in the center. Not very exact but using a penny the tread came up to Lincolns forehead/hairline. Money's pretty tight right now but there's going to be a bonus at the end of november, so if they're good enough to drive on for another month at least I won't worry. I could buy some right now if I went cheap, but I really want some michelin's and they're going to cost me about $800 total. I just don't see the point in buying a set of tires for half that price if they only last half as long as the michelins will.

 

Dude, I believe the Michelin rebate is on right now, I think $70 off a set of four? Ends soon. google it. Costco is doing their sale, too.

 

If they are still round and hold air you are good to go. Now thats if you are broke now you have the money do it now.

 

If you know you got money coming- They'll hold out a bit longer. But not much.
If you had tread to the hairline you are still legal as far as I know (NY, CT, MA, FL, AL, MS, AL legal at least)- Don't give it much longer before you get those taken care of tho-It's not worth getting into an accident to try to hold out to save a few bucks or whatever.

Call me crazy, but I never wear a set of tires down to the wear bar. I'll run them to say 25% of the original tread, and get new ones. It just isn't worth it, especially since my truck gets used as the family vehicle more often than not.

 

Same here, and plus the tires with higher load ratings are shot before they are worn to the wear bars. The rubber compound actually hardens and you'll start to lose traction before they're worn to the bars.

Which tire is that? For a tire thats close to needing replaced, the wear actually looks pretty good. Dosen't look like excessive wear around the edges or anything.

What was the original mileage rating if you know? Do you keep up on the rotations?

Are those the rugged fails?

The Rugged fails on my buddy's '08 prerunner are doing the same thing after 20k miles.

 

These are Toyo open country at's, I think they're only a 50,000 mile tire so I'm actually pretty happy with how well they've worn. You guys have all convinced me to try to move up my tire buying date, I'm going to have my wife read this thread just in case she tries to give me any crap.

 

you definitely want to get some new ones less you'll be on the interstate and one will pop on you and peel a fender or quarter panel off
