confused about tpms from a steel wheel into an alloy

my truck is a 2010 regular cab 4x4 with the 16 inch steel wheels. ive been lookin at alloys on line and in person at a few places. i was at discount tire last weekend and the guy there said the original tpms would work in the alloys however when i went online to tire rack and clicked on important nots it says only the factory alloy tpms will work in an aftermarket alloy. it says the steel are not compatable. any info on this would help me a great deal. thanks in advance

Here's an option for you. A few members here have this kit and seem to like it. It allows you to keep the TPMS sensor function but use standard valve stems.

Otherwise, I was told the same thing Whippersnapper mentioned. The steel and alloy sensors are different and not be interchanged. Something about the angle they sit in the wheel I believe.

 

I have been running a similar kit for 20,000 miles with no issues.

Um... it's the same TPMS sensor. You need a new kit to rebuild it (rubber grommet, retaining nut, valve core, and cap), but you can use your sensor from steelies to aftermarket alloys without any problems.

 

It is not the same sensor. The toyota steel wheel sensors have a 40 degree mounting angle and the toyota alloy sensors have a 20 degree mounting angle.

Most aftermarket rims have a 20 degree mounting angle.

Some have reported that tire shops got their steel sensors to fit in the alloys by turning them upside down. Others have used TPMS straps.

 

I just had new tires mounted on TRD FJ SE wheels. Discount Tire used the TPSM from my steel wheels, no problems that I could see. They rotated sensors 180 degrees. Clears the machine used to mount and break down the tire from rim. They wanted $50.00 more to use staps, but had to order the brackets that hold sensors to the bands. They made a note of how the sensors were mounted and everything seems to be fine.

 

I have mounted steelie tpms in allloy wheels with not problems, just need the rebuild kit for alloy wheels. There may be a difference with the sensors, but your tpms will work.
