Toyo Open Country M/T Review

There are probably a million tire threads and reviews of every tire you've thought about buying - here, other tacoma forums, tirerack.com, and everywhere else google takes you to. I just went through it all again when picking out my next set of tires and most if it is "this tire is awesome, buy it now!" followed directly by "this tire is a hot bag of sh*t, stay away or you'll die". Needless to say, I was a bit confused. I just took off a set of 285/75/16 Toyo M/T's and I figured if you're looking to buy this tire, you might land here and it might actually be useful. So here it is:

Install - 7/5/2007:
Toyo Open Country M/T - Load Range E (10 ply)
26,586 miles on the odo (stock rugged fails DO suck)
Installed at Les Schwab, siped all the way around.

Removed - 11-17-2010:
90,545 miles on the odo. On the truck for a total of 63,959 miles.
Worn down further than I would recommend - replaced just in time for winter.

Pros:
Burly as hell. 10-ply with big side lugs. I literally pulled a pair of needlenose pliars out of one of the base of a treadblock in the middle of the tire that was at least 1" buried and there was no leak. Ridiculous! No punctures at all the whole time in any of the tires.

Excellent offroad in the rocks and mud. This is where they shine.

Wore evenly all the way - usually rotated 5-10k but didn't for the last 15k or so, maybe even longer. Check the pics, they still wore evenly.

Awesome in the NW wet snow and ice when there was still tread and siping. Also performed well on trips to Wyoming, Whistler, BC, and all over WA and the northwest.

Cons:
Burly means heavy. I believe these come in around 68 lbs in this size. A similar A/T in 4 ply (P) or 6 ply (LT) tire is in the 40-45 lb range. Lots of unsprung weight. Gas mileage went down 1-2 mpg probably, I can update when I see what I'm getting with the new tires. E-rated is overkill for a Tacoma, but on the plus side you get more miles out of them.

Sketchy on the ice when past the siping. This is obvious and I expected it. I really liked them for 2 years on the ice, but the end of last winter was pretty sketchy.

I put these tires through 100+ degree F temps in Eastern WA to -25 degree F temps in Jackson Hole, WY. In the hot weather I did notice some chunking when driving on long windy highways. It wasn't too bad though.

I really liked these tires, but they were a bit of overkill for what I do. As my dd, most of my miles are on the pavement, but I do go skiing a ton and hit up the hills every now and again. Last winter the tires were at only 7/32's of tread left-worn past the siping. Not the best scenario, pretty terrible for snow driving. They made it through the summer just fine though.

They're pricey. $250 each when I bought them, they're closer to $300 now. Tires this big are expensive everywhere (around Seattle at least) and 65,000 miles is more than I expected to get out of them.

Overall, if I needed mud terrains I would probably buy them again. I switched to A/T's this time though because they're a bit more realistic to my driving habits. Wild Country XTX in 265/75/16, 6 ply. We'll see how these turn out...

I'm on my second set of these tires and I love them, couldn't be happier. My first lasted almost 50k miles. The last 10k they wore fast due to alignment problems which was my own fault. I wheel off road a lot and these are the best tires I've had for what I do. I can air them down to 20lbs when I'm off road and they get excellent traction.

Great to hear! I just got some... Just in time for a big dump of snow! So far I love them, but I'm wondering if they are overkill for me too. But I love the look & preformance of them so far.

 

Glad to see you got 60k out of them. Thats what the guy at the tire shop told me I would get out of mine, so good to know it wasnt BS.

 

I guy I work with just bought his second set. He got 70 kms out of the first, so he is a happy repeat customer.
