Newbie wanting to learn about gear ratios and tire sizes

Hello all. I am the almost new owner of a 92 Yota, 4wd, 5 spd tranny... It has 31" tires on it. I don't know if the current owner has any idea what he has in the rear end.

What I don't know or understand is gearing for larger tires.

  1. What comes stock in that model?
  2. What do you look for in gear ratio as far gas mileage? Driveability? Off roading capability?
  3. When people speak of changing gear ratios, are they talking about the rear only in 4wd trucks? Or is there something to do to the front as well?
Please be gentle. Whoever gives the most complete and extensive information will be rewarded with their choice of UFIA or boobage.

Thanks.

1. Your gearing can be found using the axle code on the door sticker and cross referencing it here

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/

2. The bigger the tire, the bigger the ratio the better the truck will be able to transfer power to the rear wheels (within reason).

3. You should change the front in a 4x4 otherwise you cannot use the 4x4 function without breaking something.

Well on your way to victory. Thanks for that.

Question on number 3... You should change the front......"to what?" You match the front gear ratio to the rear, is that what you mean?
