Is it tire height or width that causes problems?

I've been thinking about new tires and I'm trying to decide on what size to get. I'm wondering if a 255/75/17 would rub like a 285/70/17? I do realize that there is a 1/2" height difference in those sizes.

I'm also considering a 265/70/17 or 275/70/17 as well. My mind keeps telling me that it is the width of a 285 that causes the rubbing not the height.

So anyone with info is more than welcome to chime in, and I thank you!

 

could be either or...

figure, with taller tires, when your suspension is stuffed, the taller tire will rub on the inner fender walls when the wheel travels up... on turns, the inner corner sidewall may end up rubbing on the frame...

with wider tires, the outer corner sidewall may end up rubbing on the pinch weld or fender flares on turns, and maybe the front bumper valance...

get a good size lift and decent wheel backspace, and you could solve the wider tire issues...

get a good size lift and swap out to glass fenders and bedsides and you could solve the taller tire issues...

 

Well I would never put on different fenders and I'm not buying new wheels. (yet)

 

255/80/17 has less rubbing issues than 285/70/17

You need 2 1/2" - 3" up front

255/75/17 should not rub , it's only a 32" tire

 

I have Eibachs with 5100's at .85 so I have enough lift to cover these tires, I was just not sure if it was width or height that caused people's issues with rubbing.

 

its a mixture of both, it depends on where the tire is rubbing at
