Due for tires...another thread...some things to consider.

Haven't posted in a while, but I've been reading again now that I'm due for a set of tires, and would like to ideally put them on before winter. I currently have 53K on my Nitto Terra Grapplers. They've been great on the highway, not so great in the snow, so-so in the rain, but wear like iron. They're loud now, but that's understandable considering that they're getting down there in tread life.

I actually like the looks of them (pictures make them look a little less aggressive than they are in real life), but I'm just no happy with their snow performance (my rear end always wants to break loose, and stopping always results in the ABS kicking in, even when it's VERY slow breaking).

I was set on Duratracs for their price (oddly enough, I can get a set of 265/75s for less than TG's now), and the praise they get for their rain and snow performance. My concerns? Tread life (they're VERY soft), and MPG hit I'll take.

I've also considered the AT2s and BFGs since they both are severe weather rated, but I hate the fact that EVERYONE and their brother runs them.

I do drive in snow and ice from pretty much November through March, so I do spend a fair amount of time in bad conditions. However, I don't offroad in the sense that I go to parks or do and rock crawling, but I do use my truck for firewood, hunting, camping, etc, so I'm torn between an aggressive tread like the Duratrac and a more neutral tread like the TG.

If I could get 40K out of the duratracs, I'm pretty sure the decision would be a little easier.

Thoughts?

 

Check out Cooper AT3's, they're a good looking tire and Cooper has a great reputation for their performance in foul weather.

 

Ever looked at michelin's LTX AT2's? Best AT's I've ever had

 

I love my BFG A/Ts. My Moms Sequoia has Michelan LTX MS and they are great tires, last about 60K and are awesome in sand.

From shopping around in a 265/75 the NTGs seem to be the best deal in my area.

I'm really considering the Treadwright tires. Either the Warden AT or Guard Dog M/T. At roughly $100 a tire they cant be beat.

 

Mine have had good wet traction for the most part, they could be better while turning+accelerating though. Open differential doesn't help much.

Not to threadjack, but whats everyones opinion on sipped tires? Is the increased wet traction worth the increase in wear?

Looked them up, and I think they have some potential. They look as if they have a little less aggressive shoulder than the TG's, what do you think? The pictures sort of remind me of the pictures online of the TG's when I first saw them. They don't look much more aggressive than a typical HT tire, but in person, the TG's are much more substantial. Is that the case here with these?

I need to do some further research on snow performance as well.

As for the Michelin's, they're just not aggressive enough (I know I'm being picky).

Edit...I see the Zeon's are definitely not a tire made in my size. I couldn't remember why I had never heard much about them around here.

Tinker_Troy, I remember reading that thread not too long ago. Good to hear that people are seeing 40K out of the duratracs.

 

Where I live, I'll only buy sipped tires.
