You need them at full length so this doesn't happen to you:

Just remove the flaps before hitting the trail to avoid ripping them off.

If you off road like I do, then they are going to break off as soon as you drop into a rut or get a load of mud on them (the weight will tear them off). The 2nd gen flaps are junk made of hard plastic. The first gen. flaps work fine, made of rubber!

X2, unless they are already hanging by just a thread, mud isn't taking them off.

1st gen leave them if you have anything less than 33's. Just take them off when offroading.

2nd gen just take them off, they rub through the paint.

I'm curious if any 2nd gen owners get different mudflaps tho?

I like the rally style flaps, flexible but block all the gunk.

Reason I say this, is I just put a lift, 33" tires and sliders on the truck. Mudflaps had to go to fit everything, and now whenever I wheel the sliders get CAKED with mud and muck. Same goes for when it snows...

So IMHO I want mudflaps back - just not the shitacular stock ones.

Keep the flaps but trim them. I took 4" off the front & 1" off the rear.
Do they salt & sand the streets there like they do here?
