broken lug nut

    Just a few dont tell the wife!!!
    ok so is my best bet to just drill out the stud until theres no stud left????
    anyone eles have this problem???
    Also how many turns is enought when u put wheels on???

    Get a punch and a BFH and pound the stud out of the hub. They are just pressed in. You'll have to press a new stud in, I do this by getting it started, then threading a nut on the stud which pulls it into the hub. You'll understand once you do it.

    Is it the wheel stud or the lug nut that is broken?

    Front? Rear?

    Fronts are easy, rears SUCK to replace the studs (have to rent a hub puller)

    I'd say 8-10 full rotations. I have about 9 full turns on my new wheels, haven't had any problems yet *knocks on wood*

    just to be clear, Your lug NUT broke? Or the stud broke?

    and for the other part of your question: Three full turns with the lug nut is a MIN when installing new wheels. toyota's seem to have short front studs that make it hard to get alot of thread ingagment. If yours dont make the three full turns or you want to feel better go and find E/T lug nuts. They have a longer shank on them that will go through the wheel lug nut hole.

    the rear does not require a puller. Just pull the drum off and hammer the studs out same as the front.

    ok i broke the lug nut, it was a keyed lug nut and i snaped 3/4 of it off
    Its on the front ov begun drilling the stud out.
    but ran out of drill bits at time for the stores to be open tonight.
    almost there too does this sound like the best way??? also id say i get about 4 turns im looking into getting the 2003 matrix studs

    I refuse to believe the lug nut snapped in half before the stud! that is crazy since it is way thicker. Either way the stud should just be replaced. Get that lug nut off the stud and hammer the stud out.

    ok let me clear this up the lug nut was empty for 3/4 thats why it snapped

    Oh! ok I see. Yeah good thing the entire wheel didn't come off!

    So Im assuming you were unable to get the wheel off the truck? if so that is going to suck to get off, Im not even sure how to do that.

    yeah the i took it to a tire shop they tryed doing whatever they can and nothing.
    So they told me that i should drill it out and then just replace the stud
    but now i know i only get about 4turns on those shitty stock studs ill be getting so longer onces.

    wheel studs are hardened metal. You have to just keep drilling them out. I have done it plenty of times and it just takes time. I usually have to keep grinding new edges on the drill bits. just be careful and dont drill into your wheel.

    Yeah I would get good at sharpening drill bits and go at it for a few hours. Keep it lubed up with cutting oil.

    So there is no clearance between the nut and the rim? I have had locking lug nuts that we lost the key for and I just hammered a 3/8 drive socket onto them and twisted them off.

    If you can't do that, can you use a punch and hammer to try and unscrew what's left of the nut? I'd rather risk scratching the rims than try to drill out a lug stud.
