So I bought 265/65/17 BFG TKO AT's for my 4runner (stock size tire) and I'd thought I go to 275/65/17 for my tacoma to avoid possible rubbing 285's.

So I get home and measure up the widths to compare, and they are the same... Bummer, they use the same "tread mold" or whatever for the actual tread on 265's and 275's.

So save your money and either get 265's or get the wider 285's... Dont get the 275's...

    :(:(:(

Section width of a tire is affected by wheel width. I have no doubt the 275s would be wider on a wider wheel.

Also, did you conform the measuring tape to the actual surface of the tire (which is curved) or just lay it across straight? It looks like you just laid it straight.

I thought thats what the 65 meant in the tire size. It was the width.

    my bad you are correct.

    P225/50R16 91S
The 225 indicates this tire is 225 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel.

265 is your tread width in millimeters.
75 is your "Aspect ratio" a percentage of your tread width.
And R16 is obviously your rim size.

    For example, a 265/75R16 tire.
    265 converted to imperial 10.433"
    75% of 10.433 is 7.82475"

Two times your aspect ratio, plus the rim size, gives you the tire diameter.
    (7.82475 x 2) + 16 = 31.6495" is the tire diameter.

The imperial difference between a 275 and 265 tire is only .3937" so it would have to be measured properly, tire inflation and wear could play a big part.
