Tire Clearance

Factory tires on a 2012 Taco w/Off Road package are P265/70R16 BFGoodrich which have a tread width and diameter of 8" and 30.6" respectively. I would very much like to put on P285/75R16 BFG TA/KO tires which have a tread width and diameter of 9.2" and 33" respectively. Would this be possible with just a 2in body lift? If not, what if I added a heavy duty bumper like from Shrock Works? It looks like the heavy duty bumpers dont come down as close to the front tires as the factory bumpers do, so it seems like this would minimize or eliminate any rubbing. Please let me know what you think and let me know if any of my data is wrong. I really don't want to lift much more than 2in. I don't want a monster truck, just a moderate lift to get it about as high or slightly higher than a full size truck.

 

With stock wheels you will need spidertrax spacers other wise aftermarket wheels with 4.5 backspacing to clear the upper control arms...you will still have to trim a tiny bit ant remove mud flaps

 

i've got 285/70/17 and i'm pretty sure they're the same size around as the 285/75/16. i put a 3" OME lift on and it lifted it about 2.5" but i still had to trim quite a bit and do the cab mount chop on the driver's side. my wheels have 4.5" backspacing and the tires don't hit the UCAs. & my front mudflaps fell off a long time ago. Unless you go with the 6" lift, then your truck shouldnt look like a monster truck. mine doesn't

 

I am running 285 trail grappler M/T's and rub a little bit at full lock in reverse...nothing to make me chop...but then again i don't wheel offroad....strictly pavement. IMO 2-2.5" of lift with correct backspacing should be fine to fit a 285

 

Cool thanks for the info. Ya I want to keep the factory wheel but I'm not familiar with wheel back spacing. Could you explain that a little. To me it sounds like something that pushes the wheel out a bit from the axle. But I could be way off.

 

Just do a couple google searches until u feel comfortable with it. But less backspacing ex: 5 to a 4 will push the wheel away from truck or UCA..keeping the stock wheels most people use spidertrax 1.25 spacers around $200.oo for 4.

 

Gabe911, I went to spiertrax.com and found the 1.25" spacers for a tacoma. Is that what you were talking about? And I would need to get spacers for the front and rear tires correct?

I've been trying to decide to go with rims or spacers. But I plan on staying with 16" and I have no issue with the stock wheels anyway.

 

yes personal preference...I like em all out....IMO
