Pull trigger on 285/70/17 BFG AT's?

Hi all,

I am ready to buy some dedicated non-winter use tires and have been leaning towards the 285/70/17 BFG A/T KO's. I have the stock 17" TRD sport rims with Bilstein 5100's on all four tires set at 2.5 in the front and a Toytec AAL for TSB in the rear. I also have 1.25 spidertrax spacers all the way around. I have a few questions before I pull the trigger:

My understanding with this setup is that I will probably have to remove the front mudflaps and do some minor to moderate trimming to eliminate most if not all rub?

I am debating between D and E load range and it looks like there isn't a big weight difference per tire but that the D range may use a softer compound for the mud and snow rating, since I won't be using these for winter, would I get longer tread life with the E?

Lastly, I have been trying to overlook this part but with gas prices the way they are, how much worse are these tires going to make my gas mileage? I currently have 265/70/17 Nokian Hakka LT Load E studded winter tires on the truck and don't find the gas mileage that bad but these tires are only 45 lbs each compared to the 55-58 lbs each that the BFGs will be.

I have Load e a lot of people complain that there to stiff but just keep them at 32-34 psi and there fine I've put 20000 hard miles on my there just about half way Tread

 

Bumpity bump bump, leaning towards Load D now

 

Load D will be lighter/better for mpg. Im not sure if it will be noticeable though.

I just got the D rated BFGs about 3 weeks ago! Love them! I don't tow much so I thought the E would be overkill!

What kind of front springs are you running with those billys turned up to 2.5?

 

Still running the stock springs at this point. I want to order the tires tomorrow but I'm starting to wonder if I should get the BFG's in a 275 since they do make that size and it might be better for mileage and less trimming etc

Just ordered the 285's for install on Thursday. Have seen a few posts from guys that got 275s and wished they had gone bigger so I am throwing common sense to the wind and going for it. The way gas prices are going, this truck will probably only be affordable to drive for a few more years .

 

I have the exact same set up as you, billy's 5100 set to 2.5 and billys in the rear. I have the 285/75r16 AT KO's load range D. I love them, the load range E would have been overkill. I doubt you will regret these tires.

As far as trimming goes - I had to remove my front and rear mud flaps, and trim some minor plastic, which wasnt a big deal because you can barely notice.

 

Also, the load range D is actually wider than the load range E. The E has a slightly larger diameter

 

I've got 285/70/17 BFG D rated and love them. Great tire.

 

I have 285 BFGs with a 3" lift and just had to trim the inner black mud guard a bit. They look great and ride way softer then the toyo's i had before.

 

This is about the same question I have. Want to go 285, but I don't want to chop the cab if I don't have to. I have the toytec ULK with LR UCAs up front, and toytec TSB AAL and 5100s in the rear, and spidertrax on all 4. It's sitting 2.5 to 3 in up and currently running 255/75r17 BFG MT KMs. Looking at 285/70r17 BFG ATs. Cannot find a definite answer on the chop. I too might go 275 if I don't find the answer.

 

Got the new shoes installed today and wow do they look great! I did remove the front mudflaps and trim some of the inner fender and was hoping that I was all clear but then did manage to scrape when going over a bump and turning at the same time so may have to trim a bit more. If that all works out well I think I am going to be a very happy camper! As I have seen posted all over the place here, the 285 does look perfect with the 2.5-3" lift and I don't think I would want to go smaller.
