I just had my 5000 mile service and they rotated the tires. Now the front left wheel weights slightly rub the caliper. My first inclination is to just leave it. Lead is soft, the caliper has to be harder, so it will clear eventually. Dumb move or should I take it back and see if I can get the weights repositioned?

i would have them rebalanced and ask for adhesive weights that will be placed on the inside of the rim..

i have the adhesive style for off roading in mind solely because the weights are on the inside of the rim, and can't be removed from scraping rocks while on the trail..

if they rub the caliper then they are already tap on weights so why would you recommend tape on weights? the caliper is located inside the wheel diameter, not on the inside lip anywhere

I rotate and balance taco rims all the time at work and this is a real common problem. The stick on weights (that you are using) are nice because it keeps the wheel looking clean, but the clearance is tight on the front. I will usually put the hammer on weights on the outside only if the wheel is already scratched from this, I will use the stick on weights on the rim just inside the caliper in your situation. Now that your caliper has made contact with the weight it has rubbed off the protective coating on the caliper, it will more likely rust in that spot now. Take it back and explain that the Tech should have heard the noise when he did your first service.

if they use the 1/4 gram adhesive weights which are slim, they will not rub. i balance my own wheels and use the 1/4 gram weights with no issues..but what the hell do i know, i'm only a diesel/heavy line tech at a ford dealership:rolleyes:

What if they doubled up on the inside row instead of making two side by side

I work at a shop as well, not a fancy diesel tech or anything of that nature. First Tacoma that came in I made the silly mistake myself. I double stacked the 1/4 oz and it rubbed on the caliper. After I discovered this backing it up to pull it around, I redid the front with 2 roles and no stacking. It also matters where you place the weights in the middle. Some wheels have a little slope and are not flat all the way to the face. If you place weights on the sloped area your most likely going to rub regardless of using 1 stack of 1/4 oz weights.

No stacking, they originally did have two rows and they still rubbed. These were the fake bead lock wheels.

Turns out they have wider thinner weights that Toyota typically uses for these wheels. The shop that did my lift didn't use them. I guess the other wheel in that spot had rubbed as well, but I never heard over the radio and with the windows closed. The dealer rebalanced with the thin weights. Bingo, no rubbing.

Thanks for all the help and responses

Glad you got it figured out. I had a shop stack weights once. Those things hit my calipers, got ripped off the wheels and bounced off the highway before they shot up at the bottom of my cab. Sounded like random gun shots and I felt each impact.

I know this is an old thread but I am having same issue. Tire shop put too thick of stick on weights and it's rubbing caliper. They said it's barely contacting it and should go away quickly. Is that true or did they just bs me because they were too lazy to rebalance with smaller weights?

I just got mine done as well. TRD Beadlock style wheel 16” and it’s rubbing the weights. Should I have them redo it? I think I already lost front passenger weights. Not even 1/4 mile. Thanks

YES. 100%. If you've lost weights already then that means your wheels are no longer balanced. The tire shop should have checked for clearance and moved the weights accordingly. Take it back and have them finish the job correctly.

I did, they shifted them 1/8" and everything is good now. Cheers.
