    SS M16 Tires for Desert?

New to this forum, but it looks like a great source for info. I have a '12 Taco 4x4 SR5 and want some tires that will do well in the desert here in Arizona. My usual terrain is packed dirt with some loose rocks which is easy even with the stock 245-75x16 tires.

Sometines I get to play in the mud (not often) and sometimes short hills that are loose rock and "steps" going up them (frequently).

I like the looks of the Interco Super Swamper M16 tire and beleive their offering in 31 x 10.5 x 16 would fit with no rubbing on stock suspension. Please correct me if I am wrong!

But more importantly are these tires suitable for this use? Are they going to be better than a common All Terrain tire like say a BF Goodrich all terrain?

Big, flat lugs with little spacing and only one sipe per lug makes me think they won't perform all that well, of course that's just my opinion based on looks.

I can't believe I'm going to say this because I personally can't stand them, but I think the BFG A/T would suit your needs better. If you're open to more suggestions, quite a few members run the Treadwright Guard Dogs and love them. I'm also liking my Goodyear Wrangler Authorities for desert conditions.

Interco tires aren't exactly known for lasting a long time, either.

Im running the MT baja Claw TTCs they have Big lugs spaced pretty well. I went from a Nitto Terra Grappler to this and the difference is astounding. All i do is dez. With the A/T i could feel my ass end squirly and with the M/T my truck has no side to side movement at all in the trails. I love em. They do wear faster tho. So i would say yes those will be better than an A/T

As I said, I'm new to this game and appreciate the replies. I thought the SS M-16 was pretty pricey also. I'm still looking and in no need to purchase right away, so you desert guys keep the advice coming!

As far as how much I am willing to spend, lets say $250 each. possibly a bit more. Right now my truck is bone stock (no lift, 3.73 gears) I am wanting to make it work better in the loose rocky uphils offroad but still be Interstate worthy (and tollerable!) when I need to make a 120 mile each way trip for competition shooting. Perhaps an A/T tire is my best bet? I would like to stick close to stock size or a bit bigger thus the 31 x 10.50 limitation. I COULD go to a larger diameter wheel, but don't see a 16" x 8 wide being a limitation for my stock ride (do you?).

I would say all terrain. BFG all terrains are nice

TACOMABOSS, Damn! that was a fast reply! Thanks, I am leaning that way, the BFG A/T has just enought good looks to make the truck look serious as compared to the stock "car tires" or some of the mild A/T tires.

Maybe try for a more aggressive A/T like the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac or Kelly Safari TSR.

I don't hate the BFG A/T, I just think they are extremely over rated. The BFG A/T is like the Selena Gomez of tires: over 20 years old, great looks, mediocre performance.

IMO if you are looking for off-road performance get an M/T. Especially in the type of terrain you described. A/T are good for the occasional fire road thats about it. IMHO. If you want off-road performance get an off-road tire and you wont be disappointed. I would recommend Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ.

I'm a huge fan of the BF Goodrich KM2's.

Always preformed well for me in all types of terrain; snow, trail, mud, rock.

    Good tire.

Yeah, and being a gun nut shooting Servic Rifle comp every month the 223 round kinda rings my bell. But I am looking for tires not gimmicks. I would like an aggresive looking tire for bragging rights and rocky dry desert performance, but I do have to drive on the road most of my miles even though my Tacoma 4x4 in not my dailt driver.

Do you think the Mud Terrains would be road worthy? And they we get back to the SS M-16 which is stated to be mid-way between an A/T tire and a Mud Terrain.

I am going to the internet to look at the MT MTZ tire, I did snoop around at the MT site and it lookd likm most of their "hairy" tires start at 33" tall and up which is a no-go for my stock Taco... Maybee in a couple years if I lift it...

    Thanks again guys!

This will be a very noisy tire on the highway, due to the staggered shoulder lugs.

KM2s are somewhat acceptable for on-pavement ride and handling.
