275 or 285?

I have the lift (ome 885x w/dakar rear) and wheels (17x9 4.5 bs) now need to buy tires. I am looking for either 275/70 or 285/70. trying to decide which one will need less trimming. I live in a small town so there is no "test fit" option. Order and install, I just don't want to wish I had gotten the other. I'm sure there are some with the same setup that can give advice.

 

I have 285/75/16's on my truck with billies@ 2.5" on my stock OR rims and They fit. those should be the same size as the 285/70's but your rims are gonna make the tire hit the Cab mount some @ compresson

 

285 is more of A common size... 275 is an odd size tire... You'd have more to choose from with 285s than A 275.

 

Well, the 275 would definitely need less trimming. 285 without trimming is generally not considered possible. 275 is about as high as you can go without trimming if you have a lift. I have the OME/Dakar lift also with 886 on TRD Sport wheels. My tires are 275s and I have the slightest bit of rubbing on my driver side fender at right lock.

 

I know that I will have to trim some plastic no matter which tire I use. But I didn't want to have to buy 2 sets of tires. I can get Cooper discoverer at3 in both sizes. They look good and are made about 70 miles from where I live so I could kind of help local industry. I would rather have the st maxx, but they are a 10 ply tire and will probably ride rough but they only come in 285 for 17 inch.

 

I run 275/70/17 , zero trimming , I even had the front flaps on , but I am on stock Sport Alloys

 

Sport alloys are 17" also? so I shouldn't have much trimming involved with 275 on this truck either.

 

The backspacing is different though

What I'm saying is that you are more likely to rub the fender with your wheel backspacing than mine

 

I installed the lift today. I know it will settle some, but right now it is 3 1/4" measured from center of the hub to the flare. I took a stock 17" wheel with a 265/70 and put it on my truck and there was PLENTY of clearance. I know the width is less and backspacing is different, but the way I measured with the wheels turned at all different angles a 275/70 will fit with no rubbing. So I ordered them and will put them on thursday. Thanks for all the advice I really appreciate the help.

 

did you compress the suspension (remove CO's) to the bump stops while turning ?
