285/70/17 or smaller?

ok so i know this has been asked a lot but im putting a 3" lift on my 2010 prerunner and i really dont know exactly wat tire size to use..i know lots of people have said the 285s require lots of trim work and im really not wanting to do that..any tire size suggestions?

 

275/70/17 or 255/80/17

 

Depends on backspace my wheels will be in tomorrow and I am going to go 275/70/17 or 285/70. I am going to go to a tire shop probably discount and put the tires side by side next to my truck and see what they look like. Also there are not to mane manufactures that make a 275 but BFG AT is one. People that have the 275 say that they dont rub.

Edit: The wheels I got are the SCS Stealth 6.

 

ya i would go with the 275s but like you said there isnt many options when u go that size.. i was looking at the bfg mud terrain or the nitto trail grapplers..i havent order my wheels yet but plan on doin it soon..i also have thought about goin 265/70/17 but im afraid they will look to small

 

Yeah 265 is to small with a 3" inch lift in my opinion. Also 265's look good on 16" wheels not 17's. I am thinking of going with the Falken Rocky Mountain ATs in 285's. Those tires are supposed to be decent and not to loud on the hwy.

The 285/75R16 or 285/70R17 are considered the biggest you can run with some trimming. If you have to hang with the kids with the biggest tires then get these. If on the other hand you want the advantages of a bit smaller tire go with 265/75R16 or 265/70R17. This 20mm narrower tire is a few pounds lighter, requires NO trimming of mounts oe fender liners, tracks the road or trail a bit better (because it weighs less), and it will not screw up your power as bad without a ring-and-pinion swap or rob you gas mileags as bad either. I run this size on my 4x4 Tacoma and feel that with a good tire I am not giving up much at all to the 1" taller 285 tire but gaining perhaps even more.

I'm sure to have my choice disagreed with, so let me slip into my flame suit while the replies come in.... (I do realize the tallerr tire rolls over obstacles easier).

 

im running 265 65 17 now with no lift..i dont want to go to small of a tire when i put my lift on and i also dont want to have to cut up my truck to put a big tire on there..some people say the put 285s and have no trouble and then sum have to cut all kinds of stuff to fit them on there..

I think it depends on the tire too. Duratracs look good in that size.

 

It depends what kind of tire you run. Some are beefier than others. A 265 in one brand could look smaller than a 265 in another. I have 265/75/16 Duratracs and I don't think they look small. I had them before my 3" lift and was worried they might look small with lift but I'm happy with them.

 

I am sure this is correct. I am running the ever popular BFG AT's. I know they have a broad shoulder.

 

ok so i checked on the wheels that im getting and they are a 17x8 with an 4.74 b.s. if i went the the 285/70/17s u think they would rub to bad ?

 

Seems like you want to run the 285 which is not bad but just know that the truck will feel a bit sluggish with bigger, heavier wheels and tires compared to stock.

 

i do want to run the 285 but i think i may just go with the 265 70 17s that way i wouldnt have to do any cutting or change my gear ratio to compensate for the power loss of the 285s..people running the 265 70 setup do u like the way it looks? my only concern was that the tires would look to small with a 3" lift

 

You don't need to regear for 285s. IMO, I think if you go with 265s and see A Tacoma with 285s in person you will regret it.... Sounds like you want to get 285s... Might as well run 285s if you are lifting the truck. Here's what 265/70s look with a lift

Yes, on the inner fender. Didn't take much to trim, I do get a little rub but it's at full lock....
