    Example:
    265/75/17=
    265 is the sectional width in mm
    75 means the tire sidewall is 75% of the width (x2)
    17 is the rim dia.

    So, If you want the same width tire, on a different wheel, you have to look for a smaller sidewall height. a 265/75/16 is the same height and width as a 265/70/17

    Many tires have a listing for recomended wheel width. A 285 will fit quite well on a 9" wide wheel, but a 325 width tire may need a 10" wide wheel.
