Example:
265/75/17=
265 is the sectional width in mm
75 means the tire sidewall is 75% of the width (x2)
17 is the rim dia.

So, If you want the same width tire, on a different wheel, you have to look for a smaller sidewall height. a 265/75/16 is the same height and width as a 265/70/17

If so, here's my question.....on an 18x9 rim, how can a 285/60-18 tire and a 325/60-18 tire both fit?
This is where I'm confused. If I get an 18x9 rim, how can I find out what tires fit?
Many tires have a listing for recomended wheel width. A 285 will fit quite well on a 9" wide wheel, but a 325 width tire may need a 10" wide wheel.

^^
What he said. My 285s are recommended for rim width between 7.5" and 9".
