Im looking to soon upgrade my wheels tires and shocks on my 05 tacoma prerunner. I am going to lift 2.5" inches with the 5100's in the front and 1.5" or so in the rear with aal. Originally I was thinking 285/70/17 duratracs or 285/75/16 grabber at2 on pro comp 7089 wheels. I know that a 265 is as large a tire that will fit with the stock suspension, so I was under the influence that something a little larger would fit with the lift. I was just at my local 4wheel parts and an associate there told me with the 5100's the largest I can go is 265.

What im getting at is what is the largest (widest) tire I can fit witout any issues with the 5100's set at 2.5"?

You can run 285 with 2.5 inch lift you need to remove the mud flap and trim the fender back and a cab mount chop will be necessary as well. But if you don't want todo any of that go with 265 you won't have an issue

Guys at 4wheelparts sometimes know what there talking about but you gotta do some research to see what works and doesn't work and in the end will make everything easier when you pull the trigger on things

The larger size tire you want to run depends on what the rim offset and backspace are and how much you want to trim/cut/chop... Guys run 35's on 3 inch lifts just gotta cut a lot.

Wish I had 35 and I've seen people run 285 on a stock setup and there fine.

Thanks for the input guys. Doing as much research before I buy anything Is exactly what I am doing. My front flaps are already gone, but I really don't want to chop anything else. If I changed the back spacing by 10 mm that should account for the wider tire, but will that have any negative effects? Other than the tire will be sticking out more...

If you don't want to chop or cut anything your not gonna be able to run 285's.... Well you can but you'll rub when you flex and at full lock. I don't know of anybody running 285's that hasn't had to trim alittle bit to get rid of rubbing... It's not as bad as it sounds though once you trim or cut you won't even notice it's been done

The guys here are correct. If you don't want to do the CMC, it would be best to stick with a 32" tire.

You could run 285/70/16 with 4.5" bs wheels. I ran them with 2.5" front lift. Lock to lock & flex with no rubbing.

I am running the identical suspension with 265/70/17. Wish I would have bought 275/70/17, I think my current tires look a little to small.

My thinking is the same, the 265's would look a bit skinny with a 2.5" lift. Not bad but I wanted more

Sounds like an idea. Maybe meet half way? Backspace a little so less trimming is needed, but not so much that the wheel is sticking out too much.

Did running this setup look funny? Like the wheels were sticking out too much? Did It cause any other issues?

With the 285's the tires would rub the fender flares and not tuck in to the wheel wells when wheeling.

They would rub the fender flair even with the 2.5" lift?

The more I think about it I may just go with 265's. They bolt right on and I will get better gas mileage with them vs 285's... I think it will look good if I set the 5100's at 1.75" in the front and 1.5" aal in the rear.

or get 255/85's, taller, but narrower, can fit stock rims and no metal cutting, just maybe mud flap removal

I'm going away from the stock wheels. I don't want my tacoma looking like 90% of them out there

Lift has no effect on rubbing, just amount of compression till it rubs.
