New Tire questions.

Hey, I have 265/70/17 tires right now on my 2005 tacoma trd sport 4x4, no modding or trimming and i dont get any rubbing i will be buying a new set of tires and want to know if i can go any bigger like 270/70/17 without any cutting or major modding/trimming? If anyone has these size tires let me know if you had any running also. I am thinking of also getting a 2" lift eventually but dont have the money right now and dont know if me doing that will allow me to fit bigger tires if so can somebody let me know? If it will i might wait till my budget can handle both the lift and tires at same time. If somebody has any information on this let me know, thanks

 

As far as I know you can go 265/75/17. And that should still look fine with a 2" lift.

I'm running 265/70/16 on my 16x8 wheels. Had them before my 5100's and was afraid to go up to the 75 on aftermarket wheels being that they are wider. I read they would rub and I read they would clear. I came to my own conclusion that on the stock wheels the 75's would work but IMO thought they would scrub on my wheels so I stayed with 70's. Now I have 5100's at 1.75 and wish I had went 75's. But it still looks fine though, I think.

 

yeah those still look good if those are them in your sig pic, and those are 265? cause i wanted to go 270 with no lift at first then get lift but they would rub for sure eh

 

i think i might just go with 265/70/17 (stock what i have right now) just new ones that are more aggressive probably toyo's. Seeing that i dont think it is possible to go 270/70/17 on my stock tacoma? if anyone knows if it is possible to go with 270/70/17 on no lift tacoma without major trimming let me know, even if there are some modding it would be fine just let me know what i would have to do, like remove mud flaps, etc stuff that isnt a big deal i dont really want to do any welding or serious cutting/trimming though anyone know if it is possible?

 

That size you're wanting isn't much different. But it is an odd size so it may be harder to find and might even cost more being an odd size.

My Yokohama's seem to run larger for their size as some manufacturers do. My truck had the 17's as yours does but I got a good deal on my wheels so I went to 16's. My 265/70/16 were actually taller then the factory 17's in the same size. I measured my ride height just for kicks and was surprised to find that I gained roughly an inch of height. So I rolled one of my factory wheels beside and indeed it was shorter, and that was without the weight of the truck on it. So if you're interested in Yokohama's you might actually gain some height with the stock size.

One of the reason's I picked these was the fact that they were the lightest tire I could find in the size, still had a mildly aggressive look, and were one of the cheapest also. My mpg's didn't suffer too bad but more so from the wheels I think. Lost at the time about .5 mpg.

If you do want to go 265/75/17 then I don't think any trimming would be major as I had read. Remove the flaps and minor trimming on the plastic fender well from my understanding. I didn't want to do that since my truck wasn't even a year old at the time. And I didn't want to remove the flaps since they do protect the paint and help keep it clean.

Hmm interesting thank you for the info. input and the link i appreciate it, how much is 4 yokahomas cost ya for just the tire no rim? might keep my 265/70/17 sizing even with lift i dont think it would look to bad just with new more aggresive thread. it does fill out the wheel well now pretty good and doesnt rub and doesnt rub at all.

Well at the time I paid $139 each for mine through Discount Tire Direct. They beat Amazon by a dollar each to get my business. But they are great to deal with, not just Direct but the local store too.

But after looking at the thread I posted I remembered that the stock size was 265/65/17 wasn't it? So that would mean you're already up a size which should be the biggest you could go w/o lifting.

 

ok tacodawg i didnt know it was already sized up bought the truck with these tires on it and just figured they were stock since everything else is. and that is not a bad price at all for tires, how are the threads on them you said mildly aggresive? and thank you evan for link i will check it out and talk to kpt

 

With an 06 PreRunner, if i go with a 3 inch lift can i go with 275/70/17? anybody have it on them right now?

 

been told on my 05 stock tacoma trd sport 4x4 max i can go is 265/70/17 but not sure with a lift i want to get a 2" lift in near future but dont know if i still max out at those dimensions without major modding or cutting. dont want any rub

Well I went for compromise, still rides good and quiet, but wanted an aggressive look. Not the most aggressive looking but for overall thought it was a great choice. Next time I may go to a mud terrain though. I really like the look of Cooper ST Maxx. I've heard they were not too noisy and still ride pretty good.
