Rim Painting Questions

Hey, i want to paint my stock rims black on my 05 tacoma trd sport 4x4, i will be doing it myself but not sure what to use, any opinions. Obviously i will want it to be very durable and stand up to the elements and daily driving, but not sure what would be best. Paint? i heard of plastidip'ing rims? Dont know if that holds up anyone paint there stock rims and not had any chips or what not and what did you use and how did you do it, i want everyones opinion on it. Also what about using bed liner on your rims? I googled it but nobody seems to have tried it i think it would look good like using monstaliner or rhinoliner? Thanks

I thought about painting my stock sport rims for a long time. I did alot of research. Plasti dipping seems to last about a year before it starts to flake. If you deep clean and use rustolium primer, paint, and clear coat it will last about 3 years unless you you have to replace the tires which will cause some damage to the paint. I finally just broke down and bought new rims because I wanted them to last. I got blackrock 909b rims for $560 from 4 wheel parts. Then I sold my stock rims for $400.

 

Nice rims, ya I though about just buying new ones and I would rather do budget it's just budget for that right now would be better to paint or plastidip right now, or monstaline but don't know if anyone has done that before want more info on it

 

im curious too. i want to redo mine and i want them to look good. but theres so many different types of primer and paint that i dont know what to get. so subd =)

 

went and looked up on the rustoleum website. if you go to the "choose you project" or something like that section, it has a DIY section to painting rims. It recomends the rustoleum self etching primer and the high performance wheel paint as well as the high perfomance wheel clear coat if you want the glossy appearance.

 

yeah that was stuff i read with some research to use, probably end up doing that i think. Sand it with heavier grit then medium and fine sandpaper then primer it and paint probably 3-4 coats on it and let it cure over a whole weekend then clear coat to seal it and get the nice glossier look
