FJ Cruiser Steelies Tire Size

I have tried the search function with not the best of luck so i was hoping somebody from this section could help me.

I have a 2007 Tacoma with a ProComp 3 inch lift currently I have 275/70/R18

I want to get FJ cruiser Steelies I figured out they are 17 x 7.5 backspace 4.5"

I want to know if I can fit 285/70/R17 tires on them or would they rub? If so 265's the biggest tire i can fit?

You should be able to fit a 285/70/17 tire on those FJ steelies without a problem. You might get away some only minor rubbing on the cab mount, but the only sure way to find out is to get them on there. For daily driving, you're good to go.

I am going to try them tomorrow at Discount tire to see if they fit.

However I want to be able to do some offroading as well with that setup since I am going to be taking the truck to Baja.

 

You'll have good clearance on the suspension side so if anything a CMC mod will take care of any additional rubbing.

 

Turns out they don't fit, when I turn all the way they hit the Chassis behind the shock on the side edge of the tire.

I was thinking maybe some spacers? I found this thread saying that people fit the size of tire i wanted with spidertrax.

But then i called wheelers where they sell them and they told me it would still rub.

Any suggestion?

 

When you say chassis behind the shock, what exactly are you referring to? The upper control arm or the frame?

I actually used to have some FJ steelies myself on my 1st gen for a short period, but I never measured the BS on them. I just did a little research and it looks like the BS is actually 4.75" and not 4.50" like you listed. Mine rubbed a little on the frame at full lock, but it was minor.

You should be able to add some spidertrax adapters to get extra clearance, but this might cause it to rub the cab mount area when you push the wheels out.

 

Pretty much right there on top of the LCA, below the white tag.

 

One more thing.

I was looking at the specs for the Lift Kit that i have installed on my truck.

And all the specs seem right except for the wheel width.

They reccomend a wheel 8 - 9 and i know the FJ Cruiser Steelies are only 7.5 wide. So maybe the spacer will help?

 

That's the typical area where it likes to rub on the frame. As I mention, you can either live with that or add the spidertrax and do the CMC mod so it doesn't rub there.

Or you can go with the "pizza cutter" look with 255/80/17. The overall height is similar, but the tire is only ~10" wide instead of 11.5" wide.

 

Thanks just ordered a pair of 1.25 Spidertrax, hopefully that will fix the problem.

I was looking at the CMS MOD but unless I am looking it wrong it looks like a different place where they cut the frame.
