"3/8ths tread on tires". This good?

So, im looking at some tires on eBay to possible buy. The pics of the tires look like they are in very good shape. I asked the seller how much tread is left and he said there is 3/8ths tread on the tires. Now when I heard this it makes me think that the tires are low on tread. But after reading I've realized I'm very confused as to what tread depth numbers are good and bad.

If it matters... the tires are 255/85/16 BFG km2's. he's asking $600 for tires and wheels, although I cannot use the wheels but I could resell and gain some of the $ lost. Anyway, is there enough tread left to last a good while?

New the tires have 19/32" of tread so 3/8" is about 60-65% tread left

 

That's not bad..... They've got about 66% tread left, and about 40% useful tread left. (These tires have 18/32" of tread, brand-new, and should be replaced between 3 & 5/32".)

Unless the wheels are something special, it's a wee bit overpriced imho. What kind of wheels are they? Also, did he tell you what the last 4 numbers of the DOT number are?

Oh ok cool. Those look like the original KMs, not KM2s. Since that's the case, you definitely want to verify the age on 'em before buying. Then, if they're not too old, I'd say get them.... try to get them for under $500 though. $600 is kinda high.
