On the 1st gen, you have to buy a new rims to put larger tires on them.

Did you have to run wheel spacers?

Ya, 9" is plenty wide. Stock PYOs for the Silverado were only 6". Truck came with 245's which really were max for the wheel. 285s would fit, but they were really pulled in and they were not safe for towing or hauling heavy loads.

Are your rims 9" or 8"? The outside rim width is 1" over the bead width (but 8" is still fine for 285).

    Depends.

265s work just fine on the 5-spoke "star" type shared with the Tundra.
That's the factory tire for the Tundra TRD.

    That's what I though... either 7 or 8.
9 would have to be to the outside of the thin lip at the very edge, like if you laid the rim down and measured to a 2x4 laid across the top.

Lets also remind him you cant run the biggest tire you can mount on the wheel without a lift.

Yes, Bilsteins set to 2.5" paired with a pair of springs from a sport model.
