identical to the above, i finally got my wheels from Discount Tire Direct, and my brother in law said they will be stolen in a week.

i remember growing up in New York City and seeing cars on blocks all the time. i have not seen it since.

seems custom rims are very common nowadays, and only $7,000 'designer' 22"+ wheels get stolen - and that's if you live in DA HOOD.

i don't park anywhere they are likely to get stolen anyways.

these rims cost $160 each (after rebates), will someone please tell me i'm not crazy for fearing my rims will not get stolen?

They wont get stolen, your truck might get broken into and your gps and ipod stolen. But the wheels are safe.

I might would put a set of locking lugs on it to be safe though.

Damn this guys in idaho, were you on vacation in detroit when it happened.

Also the only time.Ive heard of wheels getting stolen it was because of a truck.braking down on local trails and it being left there for a couple days.

A guy at work reminded me the TIRES are worth more money that the rims!

Another guy at work has a brother that’s a cop, and he said the only likely wheels to get stolen are:

    • extremely expensive rims
    • when the car is parked in a high-crime area
    • particular STOCK rims, such as the chrome ones on a Cadillac CT-S
he said cordless impact wrenches have recently contributed to street theft, but otherwise, not to worry.

And it’s significantly harder to steal wheel off a Tacoma, since it’s higher up, Milk crates won’t hold the truck high enough to get the next wheel off.

My son's friend had his Tacoma stolen the other day. It had nice wheels and tires and a tool box. It's easier for the thieves to steal the truck and then strip the parts they want afterwards.

It seems like it varies based on location...

In the 1990's the custom wheel market was waaaaay less abundant than it is now. Nice custom wheels back then were worth alot more. Now that every company other than Boyd Coddington (and probably him too) outsources to china... custom wheels have become alot more abundant and less valuable - less targeted for resale on the asshole market.

That said, even then just add a set of unique locking lugs, but make sure to store the key in a VERY secure location because if you lose it...you might have to pay a machinist to make a new key or weld the lug to a bolt to it to extract it.or you could break the stud...risking harm to the caliper. etc etc.

But yeah as others said....u kinda have to watch out for the whole damn vehicle anymore. Unless your custom wheels fit the DonK someone wants to fit them on 5 states away, you are pretty safe.

The locking lug just makes it a few seconds harder for the thief to obtain your wheels. hopefully within that time someone drives by and scares them into a bush.

Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll steal the truck and leave the rims for you. :D

    Too few to list.
I think it's more likely that they steal your cats than your wheels.

locking lugs are not the complete answer, they make a socket attachment when partnered with a cordless impact driver that will make quick work on locking lug removal, it is how they get the suckers off when you lose your key...

If they want them, they will be gone... Cordless impact and a rounded bolt extractor (this isn't a secret to thieves).

As for height.... Ur axle is lower than the frame.

I wouldn't worry too much unless its that bad of an area.... And then, as others have said, the whole truck will probably be taken instead.

Ya just can't have nice things anymore I guess.

Don't stick out and your less likely to have issues. I worked in Philly pretty much the last 15 years and never saw cars on blocks. Now cars with boots on them is a different story

    No, the rims are safe.

The tailgate, now that is a different story. Left my truck, in a parking lot overnight; someone obviously needed my tailgate more than me.

I did install a Pop & Lock, now they will concentrate on something else.

It's so infrequent in this area, I never even think about my aftermarket rims getting stolen. Like another poster said, I'm much more paranoid about my tailgate getting jacked or somebody crawling underneath and stealing my cat. Those seems to be the big theft items these days, apart from good ol' fashion smash-and-grabs.
