Hey guys. I have BFG Rugged Terrain's on my Taco, size 265/70r16, put them on 2 years ago in January and have about 40,000 miles on them. The truck (2008 DCSB Prerunner stock suspension) just passed the 80,000 mile mark. The tires have been showing alternating lug wear on all 4 corners, on the inside and outside of the tread only. Pics are below of rear and front. What is everyone's thoughts on why this is happening? I have had my alignment checked, it's good. Another couple of shops said I need new shocks and I've used the search on TW to try and find people with similar issues, but no luck. Usually you just see one section of the tread "cupping" (middle, or one edge), not both. If I need new shocks I will be getting 5100s. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Weird. I've never seen both sides wear like that either. Only thing I could think would be ball joints. If the tire wobbles then I could see that happening rather than just camber being off and wearing the outer/inner portion of the tire. And this is happening on both fronts and rear, inside and outside? Are you rotating? The rears shouldn't cup unless if you've got a serious problem.

I rotate them every oil change (5000 miles). I assume it is both fronts and rears, but maybe it's just the fronts and it appears it is both from the rotations. But yes, inside and outside, every other lug. I run them at 36 psi (used to run them at 31/32 but figured it might be too low since it was both inside and outside? That was my logic anyway.) Ill do some research on how to check for worn ball joints or have a shop check out my whole front end. Do you think it could be worn shocks too? What is the normal interval to replace, or how long have people ran the OEM shocks until replacement?

    Yes
If your shocks are toast it will cause that cupping for sure, the compression dampening of the shock is really light when they wear out and it lets the tire wobble basically. 80,000 on your OE shocks and OE coils - those puppies are probably toast.

I've just noticed the same thing happening on mine. 24k on the truck, 20k on the tires. Rotated regularly, 38-36psi. Just had them swapped letters-in a few hundred miles ago when the new wheels went on, and that's when I noticed. It's definitely more pronounced on what was the inside of the tire.

had the same issue on my driver side front......ended up being a loose UCA. damn LR UCA bolt was only finger tight. destroyed my tire, uneven wear, some lugs don't even touch the ground.

I better have a shop check out my front end, and probably get new shocks. Good excuse to get Bilsteins on all 4 corners and level out the front! Do I need to get new springs also? Or are the stock ones still good at 80k miles?

I'll be darned - I just went out and looked at my truck. All 4 Rugged Terrains look that way @23,000 miles.
Thought this was weird, so I went on BFG's website and looked at pictures of the tire - look just like my tires and those of OP - all "cupped" every other lug.
Why - Who knows? Maybe noise reduction by not having completely regular lug pattern??

I dont think the tire comes like this from BFG. They didn't get like this until 18 months after I bought them. They were wearing even before then and are louder now since every other lug has been worn down some (feels rougher at slow speeds too). Anyone have insight on if I can change just shocks or do I need to change shocks and springs at 80k miles?

Happened to me on my '91 Hilux. Some guy on the street came up and noticed and said it was my wheel bearings. went to my mechanic and he said same thing without telling him what other buddy told me, I wore mine down to nothing but slicks on the 800km drive back home from where I first noticed it on my holiday! mine were those shitty BFG all terrain TA's!

I have alternating tire wear too on 265 70 R16 Terra Grapplers.

    From a fleet website....

    Alternate Lug Wear

When every other lug on the tire's tread is wearing early, it means that the tire's lugs are not making contact with the highway at the same time. You will most often see this with duals, as this can be caused because of mismatched dual tires or inconsistent inflation of duals. Also, some tread types may routinely wear in this way. If the dual tires are the problem, properly match and inflate them and continue running the tire. Otherwise, choose a different type of tire.

I have the same exact tires and have the same issue. I think I will slightly modify mine with an ideal tire groover. I hope to make the outer knob a little more pliable. P265/70R16 on my DD '96 4Runner.

Is it cupped or is that heel-toe wear?
    What rotation pattern?
