Just bought a 12 SR5 with ugly stock steel wheels. Can I safely put the 17" alloys that come on a TRD sport? Or am I best to stick with 16. I'd like to get a taller look without a lift. ?? First photo is my nasty steel wheels. Other pic is regular alloys I want. Thx.

If you stay mostly on pavement, 17" works better.

I am 75% freeway so for sure. But wasn't sure if the change affected speedometer or other issues?

A bigger wheel won't get the truck taller. Only way to do that would be to get a larger-OD tire. Stock tires, regardless of base, SR5, or TRD, are all 31" OD. You can go up to 32" OD without trimming the fender flare plastic.

Stock speedometer calibration is intentionally optimistic. Going from 31" to 32" tire actually makes the speedo more accurate. The odometer will then under-report by about 3%, but that's typically to your benefit.

^Lower profile sidewall means more responsive tire when cornering, while still having enough sidewall to prevent hardness over potholes.

Stock Jeep Wrangler wheel is 18" on the Sahara trim, FYI.

the wheels you want aren't 17's. those are the stock 16's with the TRD Off Road package.

yeah I realized after i put that pic up that was a TRD off road. It is the TRD sport that has the 17s. So maybe I should just stay with the 16 Rim and just get a bigger diameter tire. I know for sure I need to get an alloy wheel on and get rid of those ugly steel things.

Just find a local Toyota dealer who does a lot of upgrading/upselling to the trucks they sell. They'll likely have a set of alloys off a sport and some tires that someone didn't want/pay for and may be willing to give you a good deal for them.

That or the buy and sell on here is always full of takeoff's.

It depends if you like the 17" look. If you do, you can pair them with 265/70/17 skins and get a little lift (from tire size). IMO, 16s look better. They would go with 265/75/16.

Keep in mind, you may have some rubbing with this tire size.

I guess if the wheel size doesnt affect the height at all I would rather stick to the 16s and just get a slightly taller tire. 265/75/16. Anyone have experience with this size on an SR5 with no lift?? Could I do a leveling kit - Would that make any difference on not rubbing or am I going to need a lift??

265/75-16 on stock wheels and stock suspension should have no rubbing.

Ya I have been watching. I missed a set og 16s with BFGs for 200 for the whole set on my local classifieds. Looking at a set right now that have 600 miles on them for 320.

I'm in the same boat. I want some black wheels but not ready to change stock suspension and tires yet.
