in my opinion, powder coat is dumb on wheels. I have had 2 sets of stock wheels painted black and when they get rock rash you just hit them with some more spray paint for touch up. a few minutes and they look brand new again.

I now have an aftermarket set of wheels so (just like powder coat) I have no way of touching them up when they get scratched.

Given I wheel my truck hard but even if you're a mall crawler you're bound to scratch a wheel on a curb eventually and then you have no way to touch it up.

krylon dual satin black spray paint has always done me good. plasti derp is a good idea too if you'd like to be able to peel it off.

Okay, two questions, since I know nothing about powder coating or plastic dip. One, is it not possible to touch up powder coating?
And two, if plastic dip can be peeled off, does it not just peel off on its own with normal wear and tear?

My powder coat experience is with my sliders and my rear bumper.

It is thicker than paint so when it gets scratched you lose a chunk of it rather than a thin chip like paint would be. Yes you can use paint to touch up powdercoat but it will still be noticeable, it would just match better than bare metal. Also once it gets damaged moisture can get inside it and damage the coating, start rusting (on steel), and cause more chunks to flake off.

I have not personally used plasti dip but I've seen lots of people who have. It is a lot more durable than it sounds. Like someone on the last page said it holds up to power washers and car washes etc. but the big advantage of that or spray paint is it takes 2 minutes to touch it up and it's a thinner coat so damaged spots aren't as noticeable.

I guess if you don't go offroad at all then powdercoat may be ok, but for $50-$100 a wheel that seems crazy (+ cost of unmounting, remounting, and balancing). Remember powdercoat is not sprayed on and allowed to dry, it needs to be baked on in an oven.

5 cans of spray paint should cost you like $30. Wash the wheels, let them dry, spray them. If using black you don't need to mask off the tire... After a little while you'll never notice the difference unless you have white wall letters and get paint on them.

Hope I'm not too late to the party rustoleum semi gloss black and clear. Used rustoleum automotive primer and spent way too much time on prep. 7 mo with them and been through the carwash (w/ wheel cleaner) at least 20 times since then. They've held up great. e8a8cdde47265b9c7344c5b33eea4ecf_9963808e8e595bfb76132d3c5cf824224f8bfb8b.jpg
