Replace stock tires/wheels with lower profile

Hey everyone. Im new to this forum and desperately need assistance on selecting new tires for my 07 Tacoma TRD Sport. I have reached an end to my research and would appreciate any and all of your expertise. Heres the deal. The stock wheels are 265/65/17. I want to reduce the profile (20's or 22's) of the wheel but not necessarily increase the tire dia. I dont want to lift the truck (with a lift kit) but want a nice clean, spoty look. In reviewing Discount Tire Direct and a few other sites, it appears the options for the Tacoma are somewhat limited and the only option I can come up with is 285/50/20's. I dont want the outer edge of the tire to extend past the body work and I am afraid that this tire size will do that???

I was at a Toyo dealer today and they had 2 Tacoma's with 265/60/18's on them and damn, the tires looked huge. They looked great but Im not looking for the off-road look but more of a sporty street look. Again, I dont want to add a lift kit to the truck. What I think I really want in size is 275/60/20's but I cant find anything.

Can any of you please offer assistance? Thank you in advance

The closest size to what you are looking at is a 275-50-20. Overall diameter of the 20 is 30.8 " and the stock is 30.6". But thats a pretty low profile. Check tirerack.com they have some Continental made for sport trucks $215 ea. Hope that helps.

This will tell you the diameter of the tire and what is stock. http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos Not sure if you know how to read the size of a tire but the hight of the tire has to do with the width so a 265/60 would be shorter than a 275/60. If you don't want the tire to extend past the fender flares you also need to account for the offset of the wheel also. 275/60/20 I am almost positive would not fit unless you use spacers or something with a crazy offset. I have the 20's from the XSP and am running 275/45/20. I am thinking about changing to a 295/45 but not sure yet. On a 20/9 wheel my tires cover just enough of the wheel to not let it get curbed. The stock tires on the XSP, its a southeast package, is 255/50/20. If I can find a picture I will try to post it and see if it is what you are looking for.

so what about 285/50/20's

http://http://www.discounttiredirect...9.7&vid=009980

Thanks for the info. On Discount Tire, it indicates that I can go with a Plus 3 tire which would be 285/50/20. Im ok with this considering the following. Can you guys offer assistance to these questions:
- Will this tire size fit w/out having to lift the truck?
- Will this tire size, push the face of the wheel out past the body?
- Will I be able to turn the steering wheel without rubbing/destroying the truck
- And what do you think this size would look like, honestly, if I did it?
- In regards to "offset", please explain. Im assuming that means how far the wheel will extend outwards, or inwards, from the stock wheels? The Discount Tire Page does not specify the offset for the wheels. If the link works, these are the wheels that im thinking about.

Thanks again!

My ride improved when I switched to the lower profile tire. I also have a prerunner so I do not expect anything much more than running over a few curbs here and there which the tires are fine for. I originally had a different set of wheels on my truck with 285/50/20 tires and they rubbed only when turning very sharply in reverse, but I beilieve that had to do more with the offset of the wheel. The offset is how the wheel comes off the hub basically. More offset the farther it will stick out, but you also have to have enough to clear the brakes and what not. This is not mine, but the same wheels. Search for Tacoma XSP

so 285's will work?

So, you installed 285/50/20's on your prerunner with no problem? No need for a lift kit? What was your offset for your wheels?

Thanks

a 285/50/20 is only a 31.3" tire...less than an inch taller than my stock 265/65/17. i dont see where there would be need for a lift on that, but what u would have to worry about is the width of the tire rubbing on suspension
