Foxy what iam trying to say is in post 15 by janster and she did
a great job in finding the info on tire rack
most tire companys do not approve that width tire on 17x9 wheel
bc of the way it will seat on that wheel now iam not saying it will
iam saying it may dismount also if i or someone that works for
me were to do something like that with the statement that most
tire companys do not approve it and something did happen
we are the ones that end up in court :D
ps i stall dont think its safe :D

(that link doesn't work for me, might just be this work computer)

I understand that if the manufacturer of a certain tire is not approved for a 9" rim then that tire should not be mounted on a 9" rim, but if the manufacturer states a 265/70/17 fits a 9" rim and there is a problem such as it coming off the bead under normal driving conditions then that manufacturer could be held liable. But if a shop installs a tire that is not meant to be on a 9" rim then they are liable. All brands of tires vary by actual measurement, a 265/70/17 in a BFG is slightly different than a 265/70/17 in a Nitto, so it is understandable that some tires of the same size won't fit the same rim. I knew I was buying 9" rims and would have an issue finding a tire to fit it which is one of the reasons I went with Nitto TG.

    But to state in general
    is not accurate information.

So basically if the manufacturer says it does not fit a 9" rim then don't do it...even though there will be people who have done it with no problems.

IMHO, I would take the advise of someone who has been doing tires for 30+ years. Tires very from manufacture, so some may be approved for a certain wheel size, while other tires of the same size may not be. All tire beads are not created equal. :)

I'm in no position to argue with this. I realize there are risks with going outside manufacturer recommendations. My curiosity exists in what might happen to the tire (or wheel) if you go outside those recommendations. But I think I get the point by what others have said.

I have pretty much the same question, I am trying to go with 17" XD Spy 797 rims, they are offered in 17x8, and 17x9.. But I want to go with Parnelli Jones Dirt Gripz in the size of 35x12.50", The Parnelli website says the minimum rim width is 9".. Would it be safe to run the tires on a 17x8? Or can I even fit a 17x9" rim on an 02 tacoma?

I think it comes down to the actual specs of the tire from the manufacturer. If they say the rim width for mounting can be between 7"-9", then you're good. If they say 7"-8.5", then you aught to look for another tire/rim combo.

The rim is also offered in a 17x8" but it is .5 short of being in the tire manufactures rim width specs.. Would that be safe?

Also anyone know how well the 17x9" will fit on an 02 DCAB PreRunner?
