Black painted rims. . .bad??

I am warming myself up to the idea of painting my stock sport rims black. I have read a lot of threads with people claiming great results. Has anyone had any horror stories or real problems with them. From what I have read it just sounds too good to be true?!

One Saturdays worth of elbow grease $50 worth of paint and supplies and bam! black wheels? is it really that easy?

She is a new truck and the thought of taking a shaker can to her is a scarry thought!!

 

Yes it is that easy....I only used about 20 bucks in paint and sandpaper. Take your time and look thru the other black rim thread around here...Lots of folks have laid out their methods.

I removed the wheels form the truck...Left the tires on. Cleaned the rims with car soap and water....then wet sanded the finish off....cleaned them with water and then alcohol...let them dry, primed (X2 or X3...i forget) and then painted X3. Let them cure inside over night...and reinstalled the next day.

You might get some chipping or pinstripes and you'll have to be careful washing them (like don't put a pressure washer inches from the wheel)...but anything you do is fairly easy to repair.

 

Haven't tried it, but i would say that it's all in your prep work.

 

black wheels are sweet. I'd do it but I promised this truck was going to stay stock. Err. Except for Nav... err. and speakers... err. and floor mats.

 

DIY painted wheels aren't very durable. Expect chipping, and the clear doesn't hold up well to brake dust if you have dusty pads. However, for the price, it's not a big deal if you have to repaint them after a couple years.

 

if you want some home brew painted wheels this is the way to go.....

this paint is super durable and I use it to finish all kind of firearms with great success.

get the wheels sand blasted

clean wheels with acetone or any solvent that doesn't leave a residue

paint wheels, on the guns I paint I give them two light coats with 30 min in between

then bake for 1 1/2 hours @ 300 (paint need this to cure and become chemical resistant and your done.

I know it sounds like a pain in the ass but you won't be disappointed, no chipping, pressure wash all day long, very good looking and durable

A couple of years is not to bad, I may have different wheels by then. Another thing I have to consider is road salt, we get a lot of that here. I am trying to stay away from dedicated winter wheels like I have done in the past.

 

Not a bad idea, but I would just powder coat then if I had the rims separated from the tires. Downtime would be a big inconveinence.

 

I painted several sets of wheels over the years and had best results with an enige clear on top. I painted a set of wheels on my old Z/28 white with a clear and never had a brake dust problem.

If you bother to separate though, go with powdercoating and they will be very durable. I am thinking about doing that this winter with my Procomp steelies seeing I am getting new rubber in the spring.

 

powdercoating is good, but it too will chip if it gets damaged, and can be expensive, about $50 a wheel where I live. the gunkote will not chip and is more durable than powdercoat which is why I like it, not to mention it would be cheaper too.

 

Look, probably half (if not more) of the people on this forum have painted their wheels black. The beauty is, if it gets scuffed, you slap on another coat. If you look at the ones I did, they are two tone, silver and black. I live in WV and we get road salt from hell. Plus, I drive on gravel roads, EVERYDAY. My wheels still look great. DIY painting is easy and cheap.

#3 is UBER true. Had a guy from my complex come to my apartment looking at my truck...My neighbor was out there and she had watched me prep and paint and re-install my painted wheels.
She was talking with him about what he was doing and he was complaining that rim like that must have cost me $1000's...She didn't have the heart to tell him that it was spray paint. It's too bad but he never came back..cause I would loved to see his face.
