I have read too many threads with to much rubbin' and issues to feel very confident about putting a set of 285 BFG's on my truck using just the 2.5" front lift and 1.5" AAL with a 17x9 rim. Seems that most guys with this combo are having issues and I dont want issues!!

That being said I cant seem to find a single member who has used the BFG 275/65/17 tires?

    Is there a reason why?

It seems to be the perfect sized tire for our trucks...Almost as if it were a size designed to actually fit up correctly with just a 2"-2.5" lift?

    Did I miss something or???

i am about to put on 285/70/17, 2.5" front lift, 1.5" AAL with a 17x9 rim and bfg ko's - will let you know any issues (remind me)

The tires in questions are just smaller, 31.2 (275) vs 32.76 (285)
stock is 30.6 (assume TRD sport 265/65/17)
suggested max on stock rim is 265/70/17 31.6
so you could likely get the 275 size on a stock rim to fit without a lift and definately fit with different backspace and a lift.

I hate these damn metric tire sizes.

I'm interested in this as well...

For every one guy I see on here has pulled off the 285/70/17 on a 2.5" lift I see 3 guys who have had severe rubbage issues even at 3"....This is an issue directly related to offset, backspacing and rim width when combined with the 9" wide wheels. 8"? Not so bad. 9"s are an issue. I have already bought and paid for my 9"s and had them shipped from Ohio or something...They aint going back!!.

Said rubbage seems severe enough to warrant cutting a piece of the frame and rewelding....Not to mention the obvious mudflap removal and wheel well trimmage.

My truck goes in the shop this Monday to have set of 5100's installed with the front set at 2.5" and a 1.5" AAL.

It then goes across the street to discount tire to install my 17x9 Moto-Metal 951's and a set of BFG 285/70/17's where it then goes back across the street one more time and up on a lift to begine trimmage.

I dont mind trimmage but I'm hesistant to have a corner of the frame cut off and welded back together. Maybe if I had the truck paid off already or if it wasnt an 09' with 3,000 miles on it!!

I'm a worry wart by nature and stress the details. The guys at 4 wheel parts have already told me that 99.9% that portion of the frame that houses the cab mount will need to be cut and rewelded. They claim this is due to the -12MM offset of the 17x9 Moto-Metal rims.

I'm on the fence as the logical side of my brain is syaing get the 275/65's and know it will fit without fab work or roll the dice in hopes that I'm a member of the "They fit without anything needed but minor trimming" club.....

I cant wait til' this is done and i can go back to my regularly scheduled programming!!!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Whoa! I have never heard of anyone needing their frame cut and welded.

i have said this in so many other threads but. I have 285/70/17 tires no lift 1/4inch wheel spacer and only rubs the UCA AT FULL TURN. i dont usually make full turns and even then if i do its minor rubbing

did you look at his pics, hes definately running 285/70/17s on stock rims, but the only thing is how bad is the rubbing? and would it be cured with some offset 8 inch rims?

i dont know about the no lift part, but when i put a 3" lift on my tacoma with 285/70/17 tires on stock wheels, it only rubbed on the uca on turns as well. once i put my 17x9 moto metals on is when i had to trim the fender wells. but nothing rubbed the body mount or frame

Wait a sec...Just realized Johns is a 2WD Prerunner. That may angle stuff differerntly or sit higher due to less weight?

I bought those identicle wheels. Moto Metal 951's. 17x9. -12MM Offset. 4.5 Backspacing. For the $525.00 I spent on all 4 shipped to my door I'm way stoked as they look like a set of $1000+ wheels in person!!

    Now you have:http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/suspension/24503-tire-rubbing-frame-3in-leveling-kit.html

Well John thanks for clearing that up!

I think you have a strange phenomenon going on with that Prerunner front end. Somehow the angle that your wheels turn in or whatever the arch is must be different from that of the 4x4 model.....

Needless to say I most certainly belive you as I have seen the light!!!

Behind the light was a big sign...

    Guess what it said John...

It said : PLEASE LIFT THAT BADASS PRERUNNER JOHN!!!!

    Just wanted to share.

Nice kill on tucking them big fatties like that. You must be a pretty happy dude!
