Which tires?
i have an '01 prerunner and i just recently lifted it..now i need some bigger tires for several reasons. which brand and size should i get? i'm trying to decide between the BFG A/T and the Nitto Tera Grappler in either 285/75R16 or 305/70R16. i also thought about possibly getting BFG KM2s, but i guess that would be a little much for a 2wd. money is not real tight with this so thats not really much of a concern. any knowledge/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I say go with the BFG KM2's and if you don't like them.. Sell them to me for half price since money isn't a big issue... Wishfull thinking.. I don't have any experience with any of these tires but i like to looks of the Nitto's

the KM2 is a solid tire with good road manners. if thats what you want i say go for it you cant really overdo it with tires, yes some are better for different applications but do not let the lack of a front diff deter you from buying. the agressive tread may be useless in the front but they will greatly improve the traction in the rear

Ive got the 285 BFG KM2s and Im a prerunner. I agree with OakleyTRD in that the two fronts may not be working as much as they should be but I get killer traction in the rear, specially when I air down. I would definitely recommend getting them. As for the size, depends on your lift and gears. If your gears can accomodate the 305's, I say go for them. If not, then go with the 33s instead.

I don't think your stock wheels will do a 305. I have stock wheels and I was told by a guy at discount tire 265 is the widest I can go safely although i've heard plenty of guys are running 285's...get some new wheels, maybe a 17" Matt Black either 8 or 9 inches wide. Then you can go w/ the 305 if backspacing is done correctly... 305/70/17 maybe...

im of the personal opinion that you CAN overdo it with tires...
ive run thru 3 sets of mud grips on my truck and shortly im going back to a less aggressive tread pattern because to me...its not worth the loss of ride quality/mpg to have a set of mud grips that i use once in a blue moon i used to wheel my truck a LOT...and it was easier and worth it IMO to have the MTs...but as i wheel less and less and get less interested in wheeling my tacoma...the idea of a street tire is much more appealing... i would argue with anyone about "street" manners of a mud terrain...they are great and fine and seem ok in the first 15-20K miles when you get past that you lose traction on wet pavement, you have a harder time keeping them balance...and they ride rough as crap i ran a set of Trxus M/Ts down to the point that they could be considered bald...and from about half the life until i trashed them...i hated them...but they worked GREAT offroad after the Trxus...i had Mastercraft Courser MTs...which has been the BEST all around MT ive had...they rode great up until about the 40K mark at which point i sold them because i went to a larger size...however i still had awful wet traction on pavement I sold the Mastercrafts to get a set of BFG MTs...which is highly regarded...but to me...is a mediocre tire...the Trxus outperformed them offroad by a longshot...and the Mastercrafts held up a lot better onroad the BFGs are ok...they still have a lot of life left...however they ride a bit rough now and since i dont wheel anymore...theyre not necessary If you dont wheel a lot buy an all terrain or a street tire

i'm also a believer in skinny tires btw...
theres a lot of informal/independent research done on expedition forums etc etc...about skinny v. wide... Skinny tires will actually have MORE tread on the ground when aired down than a wide tire...and can cut thru mud and hit the bottom a lot easier if youre on sand out in the desert...by all means...run a wide tire...but i dont believe wider is better anywhere else

I was wanting to run 285's but that won't be possible unless I upgrade UCA's. So i'm gonna go taller and narrower 255/85/16...
