tire size help

hey everyone! im a new member and a new taco owner. just installed a 3 inch lift and went to les schwab for tires. they put 285 75 16 and they rubbed my bumper. they took them back and now wondering if anyone has
suggestions on a good tire size.

 

You can either do some trimming or go with 265 75 16

 

hope this doesnt sound stupid. but a guy told me he had 32 in tires on his. what size is that. does he mean 285s

IMO go the 285 and trim I went with 265 and regret it.

 

the first number is the width in mm a 265 75 16 is a 32
285 75 16 is a 33

 

thanks for your help. i also might think the rim spacing was wrong. the tires stuck out pretty wide and i think thats why the tires hit my bumper

 

In metric tire sizes the first number is the width and the second number is a ratio that gives you the height. A 285 is about an 11" wide tire. Use the tire calculator at the top of the page under tutorials, that should help you out. Hope this helps.

 

Yeah 285's are techincally supposed to be 33"s bit I think it depennds on who makes the tire. I have some Nitto Dune Grapplers in a 285/65-18, but they measured out more to a 32" tire.

I chose the 265/70R17 after talking with the local tire store i have been buying from for 20 years. The 285 would have fit but would have surely scrubbed. I installed the Toyotec with 3" lift on 9.5" rims work well with the 265s and only scrub in reverse slightly at full turn
