How many miles left on a 50% tread tire?

I am going to be picking up some 18" rims tomorrow with 50% tread left on all tires. How many miles do you think I have left on them?

My tacoma is a 2.7L daily driver, mainly city rare off road. At most I travel 33 miles from my place to a friends, once in a while I do longer trips but it's not going to be anytime soon. Conservative driver, I don't haul ass all over, my engine is all stock and it sounds like it's on it's last breath (I have mostly owned 3.9L, 4.3L or so engines, 4 bangers are new to me).

 

What brand\model of tires and where do you live?

 

Yeah...The type of tire plays into wear alot. Mud tires and A/Ts tend to wear faster on road. Passenger tires are usually made for on road miles and wear slower.

 

Don't know the brand, but they are 235/65/18, the rims are OEM Nissan Murano. I am guessing it still has the tires the dealership gave the owner (that one tire size that dealerships always use on all this one model etc. etc.).

I live in CA, it's not bad where I am, the roads are nice. I don't see much of any non pavement road, it's usually blacktop, reg. road, I go on the freeway from time to time, and do a lot of reg. street driving (grocery, stuff).

 

18" Murano... I'm guessing GY Eagle GSA's, performance all-season. Ours lasted 20K on our Mazda 3 sport. Better see what 50% really means in tread depth, since they were only 11/32 to begin with, if they are only at 5/32's now you wont be seeing 8K out of them.

 

Yeah...Without knowing the brand and style of tire- it hard to say. But seems Demoncleaners guess makes a fair bit of sense.

damn, I'm not good at the numbers for depth. Best way for me to tell is by using a penny or any kind of coin. I will be seeing them today, hopefully I don't purchase off impulse (I still have to balance them all). If either of you have used a penny to measure the treading, say up to Lincoln's nose is 50%? I'll post when I get back.

 

if you can't get a tread depth guage (very cheap and available at most DIY stores or auto stores) then just measure the penny with a tape measure to get an idea of roughly where the different depths are (100%, 75%, 50%).

 

damn this is getting harder, didn't know it was gonna get like this lol. Will do on the tape measure though, hopefully I get it right.

I don't drive al crazy or anything peeling out or stopping to make a skreech or what have you (I'm most likely the guy that is about 2 cars behind the person in front of them on the freeway, 1 1/5 cars behind a person when on the streets). I am actually a cautious driver, even more so with this truck (I don't know why, hell I haven't even thought about cutting into her yet, and it's one of the first things I always do when I get a new truck, I know I know, I love bagging my trucks). So far, the more attention I give this taco is cleaning both int. and ext. nothing more. I am in the works for new audio but it's WAYYY into the future, right now I'm just looking to get some rims.

 

About the same amount that has been put on them already. Sorry had to. Can you find out how many miles are on them now and guess from there? Or look up the milage rating.

 

have to see the manufacturer name later today (seller gets back to his house around 1 pm CA time). It's about time, I have 15 min. till 1 pm. I was looking at some ads on CL for 18" tires, and found some where a person put a penny to one of his tires. The tread doesn't even span out past Lincoln's brow.

well I have to wait until the seller gets home from work at 4 pm. So for now I am going to go out and get myself the Tread Depth Gauge.

not those ones, I am trying to find a complete set. I got the rims, the tread is pretty minimal, will snap shots. Also I think the tire is too large for the wheel well or I may need spacers for the rims.

It said Goodyear Eagle LS on the side wall.

 

The tires are rubbing when I do a full turn, it's fine when I am driving straight or don't do any kind of radical turn. Had them balanced before I got home yesterday.

 

I am not sure but it's not the tires. I checked and there wasn't any kind of rashes within the well.
